This makes me so mad. This coming from a Congress that has no clue about how to properly manage finances. They have not had a budget in years, and have overspend our treasury like drunken sailors. And they think others should be stripped of their rights because they can't balance a check book.

Not being able to balance a check book is a far cry from being declared legally incompetent.

But yes... there's definitely a pot/kettle issue here.

As I have said in recent threads the issue should be whether a person has proven to be violent with a conviction of a violent crime. And not being able to manage your money is hardly violent.

This is just another straw man by an avowed gun grabber. Schumer will whittle away at our rights one little group at a time until none of us have any.

I'm sure there's more to follow.

This is already how it works now as far as I know. I don't see how it is legal considering that these men are being deprived of their Constitutional rights without a court ever being involved. Any smart, lawyery folks know how that works?

This is a demonstration of just how frightened the administration is of veterans with guns, and by extension citizens with guns.

Frightened.

So, how long before it comes to this?:

If you do not worship the God-Emperor Barack Hussein Obama and agree with all elements of his agenda without reservation, then there must be something wrong with your thought processes and therefore we must administratively deprive you of arms. Edited by QuietDan

Now get ready to be accused by some here of wearing your tin-foil hat.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but this has been in effect for quite sometime. Only now is it coming up as an issue. Obama has nothing to do with this. This is the VA.

It's not Obama this time, but liberal politics. They get their money like the rest. Always a string attached. I
don't see how you could be forced to give up a right because of this, though. It may be written down somewhere,
but that doesn't make it right.

Agreed. This is the VA, though the Veterans Administration is an element of the administration and the Secretary of the VA is susceptible to political pressure from the White House. With an over-reaching, often lawless White House, I'm pointing out a "logical" progression.

I too would like such medical-status decisions to be adjudicated through the courts, until the leftists capture them as well.

I gotcha, Obama is the man in charge of the VA now, but the VA started doing this when Obama was still handing out basketballs at Chicago community centers and Slick Willie was getting hummers in the Oval Office.

Perhaps. I would like to see it change, but I doubt it will come from a judge. I guess they aren't barred from owning a weapon. They will just show up on NICS, which will prevent them from going through a dealer, but not private sales. Still, it is a defacto ban, similar to the BS one that prevents 18-20 year olds from purchasing a handgun from a dealer but not from a private seller.

It's just another gun grab law! Just another restriction! Just another law!

Why would a Veteran be deemed mentally incompetent to handle their own financial affairs? What happens then? Is this something the Veteran wants?

If someone is suicidal or homicidal they shouldn’t have access to guns… period. I don’t care if they are a Veteran or the Pope. But that determination would have to be made at the same time they are deciding if he can balance his checkbook.

I know plenty of people that are mentally incompetent to handle their own financial affairs; but it’s because they are stupid and were born that way. I don’t know if I would want to be around some of them if they were handling firearms; but I’m not sure one has anything to do with the other.

If balancing a checkbook is a prerequisite for legal gun ownership, then probably three fourths or more of all gun owners are disqualified from gun ownership including government representatives.

Someone enlighten me if I'm reading the article incorrectly... It says taking away gun purchasing rights to those who have been declared mentally incompetent. That goes way beyond not being able to balance a check book.

Form 4473 asks this question directly, question 11f and states that any person who answers "yes" is prohibited from purchasing or receiving a firearm. This isn't new or specific to veterans.... Wait till you have to have a govt Dr. thanks to obamacare give you a mental eval prior to getting a handgun owner "permit". Oh, you take prozac? No permit. Oh, you got a d.u.i. last year? No permit. Oh, you have been cited for posting politically incorrect rants on the internet and fined for breaking the "Moral code of social justice and racial harmony" as enforced by the newly formed "Ministry of Peace and Racial Justice" in the near future? No permit. Get it. This is just a preview of coming attractions.

The number of veterans directly affected by the VA's policy doesn't appear to very large. Only 185 out of some 127,000 veterans added to the gun-check registry since 1998 have sought to have their names taken off, according to data that the VA shared with lawmakers during a hearing last June.
