Winchester Ranger Talon

I picked up some 9mm Ranger Talon ammo from a friend and wanted to test it out. I filled up four one gallon jugs with water and shot through them from about seven yards.

As the video and picture show the first jug absolutely exploded (yes I got wet). The bullet went all the way through the first three jugs and into the fourth. I found the bullet intact in the bottom of the fourth jug. As someone who used to be a 9mm hater I can say that I would hate to be hit with one of these.

How do these compare to the Hornady Critical Defense 9mm's?

I can't answer that right now. I would like to try some more tests. I have some of the Talon ammo in 45acp that I plan on testing next. It just takes a while to drink all that milk:)

I came across a coworker the other day his dad had 4 boxes of 40s&w rangers he sold me for $10 a box. I am wanting to fun some jugs to do some testing on.

If you have a cracker barrel close by they will sometimes save you milk jugs or they have a large fryer oil jug that I used to pick up from them a few years back. The oil jug was about as wide as 2 milk jugs and held about 5 gallons of water.

My first thought was why would you shoot such expensive ventage ammo. But now I see you have the modern version. Man that is some nasty looking stuff. Got milk Edited by swim615

If the vintage stuff was better than this I would love to see what it could do.

There are several makes of ammo on the market that duplicate this performance in 9mm. Federal HST, CorBon DPX, to name a couple. Check out the 9mm ammo tests on YT from Tnoutdoors9. He pretty much covers the whole spectrum.

I'm certainly not doubting that there are equally good rounds on the market. There was nothing scientific about this test. I just thought it would be pretty cool:)

From the performance photos I've seen of the original Black Talons, it appears that the "petals" on the slug did not fold under as much, but rather stayed extended out to the side. For this reason, I've heard them refered to as the "surgeon's nightmare".

Any of the top rounds will do the job, Hydra-shoks, SXT, Gold Dot, whatever. Talons are back if you want them. What was Winchester supposed to do; argue that their round wasn’t any better at killing people than their competitors? So they took them off the market for a while.
