MRE's?

Recommended Posts

The problem with surplus MRE's is they can be quite old and not cared for. Still okay to eat, but of lesser nutritional value and taste.
Here is a good source for civilian ready "fresh" MRE's.

Mountain house can be found at most sporting goods stores (Dicks, etc) and Walmart.

They are dehydrated, but you only get a net gain in weight savings if you have a source of water nearby where you're hiking/camping/surviving to use; if you're having to use the water you're lugging around anyway, you're not saving much if any weight. After you factor in the water, both MH and MREs end up being roughly the same (400 kcal/lb give or take)

They both have their place, and you can always make your own "MRE" type meals from what you can pick up at the grocery store. They won't last as long on the shelf but great for when you're actually going to go on a trip and at least it's food you know you're going to like. Also there are plenty of lighter dehydrated meals you can make too if you don't like MH (single serving mac and cheese packets work nice in a canteen cup, then there's scalloped potatoes, ready rice, banana bread, etc).

I did my research at several different sites but ended up buying the 7 day emergency kit I wanted from Amazon. The price was about $30 cheaper than anyone else.

While MRE's are not the be all, end all, best of all food cache items they do have thier place. As mentioned before surplus ones can have been stored/handled badly. However with all the other foods out there the one advantage I see with MRE's is that each meal is designed to provide 24 hour nutrition. Meaning one isnt suppose to eat one at breakfast, lunch and dinner, rather eat one MRE throughout the course of the day. If you do eat one for each meal, good luck with any bowel movement. LOL
