we can't give up b/c if we do then they keep spreading false and illogical information. there has to be someone to argue the other side.
I have to disagree with that, our time is spent better working on other angles. When we waste time trying to argue their points, that make zero sense, we give them a little bit of validation when they don't even deserve being mentioned.

Things like gun safety, gun control, making sure that people know the loons causing issues, really are loons and not like the rest of us, are much more important than arguing with an idiot about how it was the gun's fault the crime was committed. We could spend years (and have) arguing logic like if it was the gun's fault, then pencils should be banned for misspelling, or that the firearm that was used in a robbery, should be charged with a crime instead of the person using it etc... Obviously they are too stupid to understand these things, so nothing we say is going to impact their opinion.

We all get tied up in these debates with morons because it is so damn frustrating that people can actually be ignorant enough to believe some of the things they do, but we should be spending our energy with lawmakers and politicians; the people who can actually impact the issue one way or another. I'm guilty of this just as much as anyone else around, but have been working on it.

what about the cleveland browns worker that hung himself on sunday in the equiment room not a word about it
That lunatic fringe rope lobby is the reason these hanging tragedies continue to happen.

Yep, he'd be devastated if they outlawed rope.

That's because Costas would've looked pretty stupid calling for rope control.... Oh, wait....

Looks like Costas just doesn't know when to shut up. He's elaborating on Sunday night's statement and making even less sense.
Here is an excerpt:
“Here’s where I stand: I do not want to see the Second Amendment repealed. … People should be allowed to own guns for their own protection. Obviously, those who are hunters. … Access to guns is too easy in some cases. I don’t see any reason a citizen should be able to arm himself in some states in ways only police or military should — to have a virtual militia [by] mail order or gun shows. Why do you need a semi-automatic weapon? What possible use is there? … Whitlock wrote about a gun culture. That’s what I was focusing on.”
All of the duck hunters are going to be mad now. Their arms sure are going to get tired pumping those shotguns. No semi autos is tough. How about no automatic transmissions in cars because they waste too much fuel.

Costas is another fine example of someone who has an audience of millions that really should keep his mouth shut on something he clearly has no understanding of.

Talk about home field advantage. It's gonna be one gun grabbing douchebag making equivocations to another gun grabbing douchebag.

Almost every gun debate reveals one aspect that I keep saying: there's little doubt that private sales will be banned at some point. Doubt if the NRA would give it more than a token fight either.

It's the lowest of the low hanging fruit, has overwhelming national consensus, too.

Costas' inspiration Fox sports writer Jason Whitlock post "Costas stumble" interview ...

NRA is the new KKK

WHITLOCK: "Sports gets so much attention, and people tune out the real world, that I try to take advantage of the opportunity to talk about the real world when sports lends itself to that and try to open people’s eyes. You know, I did not go as far as I’d like to go because my thoughts on the NRA and America’s gun culture – I believe the NRA is the new KKK. And that the arming of so many black youths, uh, and loading up our community with drugs, and then just having an open shooting gallery, is the work of people who obviously don’t have our best interests [at heart]."

"A gun turns some kids listening to music into a murder scene. And uh, you know, if you don’t have a gun, you drive home. You know, kids listening to some loud music, you don’t like it, you go home and complain to your wife. But when you have a gun, you open fire, potentially, and take the life of a child."

President Obama hasn’t had his second inaugural, and his allies already are pushing him to expend his second-term capital enacting another so-called assault-weapons ban. This reinvigorated attack on the Second Amendment is shooting firearm sales through the roof.
NBC Sports‘ Bob Costas couldn’t wait 24 hours after a tragedy before launching into a sermon on gun control during halftime on “Sunday Night Football.” His homily was triggered by Kansas City Chiefs linebacker Jovan Belcher’s use of a legally owned gun to shoot his girlfriend, mother of his infant daughter, before killing himself.
Telling viewers of the highest-rated prime time show that he was giving “actual perspective,” Mr. Costas recited the words of a Fox Sports columnist, saying, “If Jovan Belcher didn’t possess a gun, he and Kasandra Perkins would both be alive today.” A spokesman for NBC Sports did not respond to a request for comment on whether network executives preapproved the 90-second segment.
The Coalition to Stop Gun Violence tried Monday to drum up a national campaign to tell NBC how much it appreciated the liberal sportscaster’s “moral courage on a national stage, with millions watching.” The anti-gun group and the peacock network already have a cozy relationship.
Since November, NBC has been airing nationally a documentary called “Trigger: The Ripple Effect of Gun Violence,” which features interviews with several of the anti-Second Amendment group’s employees. The gun-grabbing coalition calls the project “a personal film” and has set up another campaign to pressure local affiliates into airing the show during prime time.
The timing of the anti-gun efforts is not a coincidence. “I find it interesting that so many anti-gun spokesmen and -women are speaking up almost simultaneously in the days since Obama’s re-election,” National Rifle Association President David Keene told The Washington Times. “Costas is, of course, just one of many, and the ‘case’ on which he based his argument was a reach. The problem was one of domestic abuse, not illegal guns.”
He said Mr. Costas‘ argument that gun ownership caused the tragedy was absurd. “The man could have killed his wife in a dozen ways and taken his own life in as many ways. To blame the incident on firearms is to twist the facts to fit the current assault of Second Amendment rights.”
The efforts of NBC and Mr. Costas to reduce handgun ownership will backfire, as Americans are arming themselves at record levels. Driven by Black Friday sales, gun purchases reached an all-time high in November, according to an analysis of FBI background-check records by the National Shooting Sports Foundation. Americans recognize this right is fundamental, and they’re stocking up just in case the administration decides to take it away.
NBC should never have given a green light to Mr. Costas‘ baseless and fact-free personal agenda. Privately owned firearms are used to prevent crime every day, from coast to coast. Gun owners ought to be more vigilant than ever now that the opposition has launched open season on their rights.

Being any sort of honest broker in Amy discussion on this matter.

I found t very interesting that he uses the exact same words in his aurora interview as this recent episode. "military style artillery" "body armor". " culture of guns"

At around 3:12 Costas stated, "roughly 40% of the guns purchased in this country don't require a background check". Is he referring to private sales or what?

Can anyone shed any light on if this is a true statement?

No, but certainly makes sense as far as resold guns. Hell, I'd be surprised if it wasn't 75% or more. But obviously, no accurate stats can exist for private sales.

I still think we'll see the end to all private sales ere long, and maybe before BHO leaves office.
