Removing military crimp

I have the RCBS bench top swager (very similar to the Dillon). I also have the RCBS miltary crimp remover bit. I have had the best luck with a Hornady primer pocket reamer bit driven with a Hornady case prep assistant. It's faster, and does a better job than the RCBS bit. It's a standard thread, so you can drive it with any of the motorized case prep tools (like the Trim mate case prep center). Pick your color. I wouldn't just use a handle if you're running a lot of brass.

The swager requires quite a bit of force, and to me, isn't as effective as reaming.

I'm in the process of reloading 1000 rounds of Lake City 5.56 brass. I have about 350 done.

I also use the Hornady reamer .

Yeah, my swager is still bolted to the bench, but will wind up back in the box as soon as I get around to it. The swager that mounts on a press may be better, but won't fit either of my single stage presses.

The reamer is quick, and gives me more consistent results.

Seems like I get more bang for my buck with the Trim Mate center, yes?

I will probably wind up with one myself. Just get the Hornady reamer bit too. It works better than the RCBS bit. You just have to be careful to keep the case straight with the Hornady bit so it doesn't shave off any of the primer pocket wall.

Has anyone tried one of these? http://www.midwayusa.com/product/135615/lyman-case-prep-multi-tool

I've been studying on getting one for light duty crimp removing and pocket cleaning.

I figure it's gonna be pretty good. The Lyman brass prep kit (the one with individual handles) seems to stay sold out. I wind up processing too much brass to use muscle powered tools.

The Hornady reamer bit seems to get the best reviews for removing crimps, but will screw right into the Lyman handle. Probably doesn't matter much if you're doing low volume stuff. I have right at 3000 Lake City 5.56 cases. I really needed to come up with fastest/best.

I use a 45 degree chamfer bit from the hardware store. I chuck it into a drill and cut the crimp out. You can find the bits for under $3. You can also use the bit by hand.

What a great idea! You should keep that quiet though, everyone will want in on it if they discover how incredibly awesome your idea is. :shhh:
