Need 22LR buying advice

Currently all of my guns are handguns (Springfield XD 9mm, Springfield XD 45, S&W Governor), but I've been considering getting a semi-automatic rifle (AR) that shoots 22LR. I like the look of the tactical style riffles that I've seen online, but I really have no idea where to begin in this pursuit. Ideally I would have it for shooting at the range and for shooting small game in a SHTF scenario. I want something badass. Any advice you guys could give would be greatly appreciated. Someone will disagree with me, but I would prefer a bolt action rifle for this. Not to take away from .22lr AR's, but I just feel that the bolt action ones, preferably tube fed, have more to offer. For example, I can feed the CCI "Quiet" .22lr ammunition in my bolt action. Pull the trigger, it sounds like a pellet gun. Cycle the bolt, pull trigger again.

Just a thought. I own the Marlin XT-22TSR. It was the only .22lr stainless tube fed bolt action I could find. For a survival gun, this is my vote.

Everyone needs at least one 10/22 in their collection. I still have the one I got for my 13th birthday and shoot it regularly.

If you're a fan of the AR type platform, the S&W M&P 15-22 is a great rifle.

I'd argue that either of those will see a lot of use, and serve you well for a long time.

Savage now makes a semi-auto version of the TRR-SR. The 64 TRR-SR. I have the bolt TRR-SR and it's scary acuurate.

If the semi-auto is close to the bolt gun, you would have a VERY accurate semi-auto .22.

I own a Marlin 22LR. I would suggest a Ruger 10/22 for you. It's accurate, quality, has the most aftermarket accessories (even conversion kits for AR style).

If I were after something bad in the .22 line and money was not a factor I would have a dedicated .22AR.

If limited to medium funds the M&P15_22 or Sig 522 gets my vote.

If you are on a budget a 10/22 will fill the bill. Then you can customize it as funds become available. I love mine.

I would recommend the M&P15-22. Perfect training rifle for AR platform.

M&P 22 is the top choice for AR's in 22.

I would rather have a 10/22 because they are user customizable.

Or if you already have an AR, a fully dedicated .22 upper to swap back and forth.

If you want an AR style go like a couple of others have said with S&W M&P 15/22. However you could buy a base 10/22 and put your own together or get: Talo and Sports South are selling "tacticool" 10/22s if your FFL can get their hands on one of these.

Not trying to side line the thread but (I have heard) that the .22 will run dirty in a AR if that were a concern but I have no real experience with the set up

Well, firearms can be cleaned, ya know. . But if anything, that's one more reason to totally separate your AR rimfire function, rather than using adapter bolt. Plus, you get a real .22LR barrel for accuracy.

Been thinking about having my last stashed lower into combo gun with .223 pistol, .223 rifle, and .22lr uppers, all in one kit bag.

If you want the Tacticool look, I also say go with a 10/22 and put on something like a Tapco or ATI. They have about 20 different versions for everything from their own appearance to an AR to an AK. I would not recommend going with the Mossberg Tactical. I own one and here is what I know. They are a 702 with plastics. Nothing at all wrong with a 702, but the way mine is, you can load a mag, charge the bolt and the bolt never goes all the way forward until the second time you charge it. The mag release is an absolute total POS and you could get more accurate throwing rocks. But it will eat anything with few malfunctions. Of course there is always the M&P 15/22.

M&P 15-22 gets my vote.
However, for a SHTF .22 for small game that can be easily carried, broken down into a small package, what about the Henry Survival Rifle?
It even floats!!!

Thanks so much for all of the responses. I'm leaning toward either the Ruger 10-22 or the M&P.

The 10-22 comes in several different configurations. Any recommendation on which one to start with and eventually customize into an AR?

Also that Henry Survival Rifle needs a place in my bug out bag.

If you want a cool 22, try a lever action. It will give you alot of enjoyment and not waste as much ammo as a semi-auto. Henry and Marlin makes some good lever guns. If you are dead set on AR style then the M&P 22 is a good deal. Edited December 2, 2012 by lshel

For badass, get the HK MP5 .22lr. If not this one then get the SW MP15-22.

Whelp, I bought a Ruger 10/22 tonight at Wally World. Couldn't find any for sale elsewhere. I got the synthetic stock and stainless steel barrel. Thanks again for all the help. This is a great community! Edited December 3, 2012 by DarylDixon
