Things I learned today

#1 Wow do I suck at shooting a shotgun. I got a supernova as an early Christmas present, its my first shotgun ever. I put a 4'x4' target out about 10ft or so, missed the whole dang thing the first time! This thing comes with ghost ring sights or something of the sort and I thought I'd would at least have hit the target the first time. Well apparently 00 buckshot and I are going to have to spend some quality time with each other.

#2 The Norris range made a new range area. When did this happen? Nothing fancy, they dug out a berm to the left of the pistol range. No seats or plywood for targets, just a dirt bank.

Other than being utterly demoralized by missing the side of a barn with a shotgun, it was a good day at the range.

What I do to figure out the maximum range is set the target up at 50 yards. The target you use should be the same size as the intended target. I start by shooting a single shot at 10 yards. I fire then I count and mark my hits on target. Then I move back to 15 yards and shoot again. Then to 20 yards. Once I miss the target with at least one pellet I consider that as the maximum effective range. At least for self defense purposes.

Right distance, wrong target. 4 inches x 4 inches, I was shooting at an index card. Make no mistake, I sucked it up the first shot big time :surrender: The following shots were better, I left satisfied for a first timer. Thanks for the training tip Dolomite, I'll try that but start at closer than 50yds
