Help picking out a new knife

Recommended Posts

I'm not an expert on knives, but know how to find the people that are. I lost my SOG Aegis that I liked very much, but wanted to look at other options before I picked up another one.

I'd like to throw out some requirements/preferences and see what the knife officianados could recommend.

1. Back pocket carry with a clip that allows it to sit deep in the pocket with only the clip showing. (I wear dress slacks and a tie to work and don't need the top of the knife sticking way out of the top.). Black clip preferred to stay relatively covert.
2. Relatively flat for such back pocket carry
3. I prefer a spring assisted opening mechanism
4. The Aegis had the little stud on the blade for opening, but I do like the flipper idea on the Kershaws
5. I like a 3 1/2 inch blade
6. Non-serrated blade preferred as my sharpening kit doesn't have the right piece to sharpen serrations.
7. Looking to spend $50-$75
8. Prefer nothing shiny. (Black blade and case)
9. It will be used for everyday use, but I'll also take it hunting.

I think that's about it, but you may open my eyes to something I didn't think about.

Tanks for your help! Edited by jay1313g

From the criteria you describe I'd recommend the Kershaw Blur. I carried one daily for over a year and have nothing but praise for it. If you can handle a satin blade Amazon has one with S30V steel for about the same price.

Thanks, Major Kong!

I really liked that one when I saw it on the Kershaw site.

Does Kershaw make anything that sits lower in the pocket though?

I've had a SOG Flash 2 and the Aegis and both knives could "disappear" in a back pocket and only show the clip. The Blur looks like it would still show a little bit of the top of the knife. I'm always in a "professional" environment and some Fruit Loops are actually skiddish of anyone having something other than a little pen knife.

I'm not aware of anything else in your price range that will sit lower. The Blur is not an intimidating looking knife by it's nature although it does have a crisp opening snap with the spring assist.

I do think the satin blade may look a little less "scary" to the sheep. I also like the S30V steel on the satin blade over the Sandvik steel on the black blade.
