What do you think of the S&W 4006?

I had one for about 10 years. It was the first gun that was designed for the .40S&W and is what basically kicked off the 3rd generation of S&W handguns.

They are built like friggin tanks...no kidding they are all stainless steel and really soak up the recoil quite well. The takedown is not unlike a 1911 without a bushing. Very nice defense guns as it can put out a lot of fire very quickly in a controlled manner.

I never had a FTF or jamb. I fed it a diet of about 2000 165grain RN bullets ahead of a good charge of HS-6. It wasn't a match gun by any means, but I do believe that it is the perfect "truck" gun.

My gun was a police turn in as 90% of them are...as long as it locks up tight and there is no barrel movement you should be good to go. Parts availability is the only problem as midway and brownells has about 50% of the components, but the rest will have to come from S&W...which sucks.

The best deal you will find on one is via CDNN Investments for $250-$350 depending on the sight configuration. They ship to any FFL in the country for only $12.

Hope this helps...I traded it for a Ruger SP-101 as the 4006 is way to heavy for CC. Otherwise I would have let you shoot mine. Last time i was at GT distributors (on Rossvile Blvd...they sell to the public now...even to folks in TN) they had one for $300 that was in decent shape.

I've had a number of them through the shop in all configurations. I got to shoot one a week or so ago.

It almost made me want a .40. Recoil was minimal, given the huge weight of the gun.

They are absolute bargains now because there are a bunch of LE trades out there.

I don't own one ( I do have a 4006) and have not shot one-but I think a 4004 or 4003 (Same gun with alloy frame) would be just about the perfect full size pistol for car/truck/nightstand use. The power of the .40 is reasonable unquestioned. The Smiths have a great double trigger pull. You can disable it with a kid in the house by removing the magazine. Used magazines are availible. Smith stands behind their products. They are so reliable they are boring. I could go on and on.

And oh yeah-I almost forgot. It's not a Glock.
