Guys, I am asking this question for my son. I have NO clue about the replies, though I do appreciate them. Perhaps I didn't know how to ask his question. Let me try again.

He explained to me that on his 5.56, if he sights the "crotch chevron in my ACOG" (?) for a zero at 36 yds, it's the same as zero At 300? I think that's what he said. I know YOU guys get that, or maybe can understand what I'm TRYing to say. He's curious about what the effective distances would be for his chevron with the .308...? What close range can he sight to, and what distance will be the similar zero.

If he's trying to use the same ACOG for his .308 it won't really work that well.

The ACOG has a bullet drop compensating reticle, meaning that it has marks for holding elevation at specific ranges (200, 300, 400 yds, etc.)

A .308 does not have the same ballistics as a 5.56. This means, for instance, if he uses the 400 yd mark on the ACOG mounted on his .308, he will more than likely miss his target at 400 yds because it drops at a different rate than a 5.56. It's a caliber/load specific optic and while very reliable/durable/convenient for use with a 5.56, it is not the optic of choice for use on different calibers. He could however, in a pinch, zero the ACOG at whatever range he desired and use it simply as a conventional rifle scope (no bullet drop compensation)

Most centerfire shoot the same +/- a inch or two out to 300yds.

If you are running non-BDC rear sights go with a 200yd ZERO

If you are running a 5.56mm ACOG on a .308win system I assume its a DPMS LR-308 or a AR-10 type platform? If so ZERO @ the 300yd line on the 300m hold point. All your shots will be cent of mass hits out to 500yds. After that the error you built in will be drastic.
