People "scared" of eating non store bought food

I have been cooking since I was 11 yrs old. I am now 39 . So I think I got the right to "rant" a bit .I dont just cook and or BBQ , I do it all , I bake and do all kinds of cooking. My wife has been in college for a long time and works full time like me so I have cooked for my family for several years since my wife has long hours and doesnt get home till late , I am presently butchering some deer and some of my in-laws and other family were going on and on and they said this " Oh lawd , wild deer and wild meat has that wild taste to it , oh lawd you gona have to soak that meat in milk and salt water to make it taste good or else it's gonna have that wild taste" . I know blah blah blah . I try to ignore that kinda crap but it sure gets aggrivating.
I dont know about you guys but I have learned that if you kill your animal , whatever it may be , and then gut it and then process/butcher it however you may do it , then get it in the refridgerator , then it should taste just fine . When people say "it has a wild taste" , I think they are eating meat that has sat outside in the warm air too long . The meat has started to rot and decay .
Have any of you guys gotten this crap from friends and all about how you should only eat store bought food because it doesnt have a "wild taste" ?
Ok I am off of my soap box , haha .

I have been cooking, ahem, for quite a while myself. I've got rants of this nature that would make your head spin.

I enjoy "gamey" meat and don't expect the masses to share my enjoyment. I'm surprised when most people will eat anything that isn't accompanied by the phrase "you want fries with that?"

I actually prefer the taste of wild game over the bland taste of farm raised. Anyone who has had wild turkey will confirm this.

Oh yes and when wild animals eat what the Lord intended for them to eat , they are better for you health wise. Like cows. God made cows to eat grass and not eat grain . When you eat beef that is grain fed , you dont get a lot of benefits. When you eat a cow that grazes and has eaten all grass , you get omega 3 fats and lots of vitamins and better versus grain fed. You can lose weight by eating grass fed beef belive it or not ! It is good for you and healthier . The same goes for deer and turkey and so forth .

I recently received some deer meat and have had the same responses. Some people are open to try it and some won't touch it (and have never even tried it). I try to explain to people that if they will eat a chicken they should eat deer. Chickens are nasty little creatures that scavenge and eat their own kind( I do eat chicken though). I was a butcher for many years and know what quality is. Our creator put these animals here for us to eat and they will win any quality contest against anything store bought.

Yep, I apprenticed the old way. It got easier as the way we received meat changed, but the quality of the meat went down.
I just don't tell them what I'm cooking
I would do that, but I wouldn't want anyone to do me that way. I just hope people are open to trying new things. Most of the time they are not.

I love deer meat. Never had any bad deer meat. I really need to go deer hunting. Never have, but tercel, if you
have too much, I'll be glad to buy some from you. :D

My wife has always been a scratch cook. She started early. Was the Betty Crocker winner in high school in Clinton.
She never liked processed food.

I love Wild Turkey, but after 4-5 shots, I really can't taste much difference in anything.

My mom will make deer chili bring it to work in a big ole crock pot and not tell a soul what kind of meat it was. It's all about perception lol.

Free range and wild game taste better than any roided antibiotic animal.

We raise free ranging chickens & I made eggs for a fishing buddy of mine one morning. I thought his eyes were going to pop out when he realized he was eating proper eggs, not those anemic store-bought 'things'

I'm not preachy about food, but pretty much all we eat is free-range & organic. Carrots that still have mud on them really DO taste better than pre-packed carrots. Eggs from chickens that can peck around, eat bugs & worms are not only better for you, but they taste fantastic!

I also do all the cooking in our family & have done for years. I butcher my own deer, birds & hogs, when I can get 'em. Knowing how your food is prepared, where it comes from & how it was treated while it was still on the hoof really makes a difference in how it tastes. Happy pigs really do make the best bacon!

I learned my lesson when my wife and I were dating, I cooked up some deer and had her and the kids over, they absolutely loved it until they found out it was "bambi".

I swore that I'd never tell another person what I was cooking.

My son in law hates butter, but will eat 2 whole cornish game hens that have been marinated with the butter creole seasoning. I think it's funny as heck.

I agree with all those comments. When I lived and hunted in TX deer did not have to be checked. You could quarter and eat in camp(some very remote locations). There is nothing better than kill it in the morning and eat it for lunch. On most 4 day hunts we would only take about 1-2 days worth of meat. The only down side to that is there were a couple of times we were riding around at night spot lighting rabbits. Which is legal on private roads.

I remember as a kid, dad used to soak deer meat in salt water for a little bit, he said to get the wild taste out. He or I don't do this now.

Many time while butchering a deer, cut out the tenderloin and cook it before it has had time to even cool down from the deer. That is some good eating.

I did soak it once in salt water a few years ago, and I thought it lose allot of good favor. Don't plan to do that again. Edited by vontar

If it don't come out of a box or a can, I don't eat it.

Cause my wife don't know how to cook it.

That isn't fair though. She can burn just about anything.

I grew up on everything. If it moved, we ate it when it stopped.

I remember one summer, my mom made up a mess of chitterlings, had my uncle over. He didn't have a clue what he was eating, but by gawd he was a eatin' em.

Then he found out what they were.

I don't think Ed ever came back over for dinner after that.

It is all I can do now to get my wife to make me a mess of collards.

Damn Yankees.
