No belt required?

Recommended Posts

So, as I sit here waiting fore the THC permit to arrive, it strikes me that I've not carried my gun before so I have no idea what sort of holster I need. Brands and such aren't a big deal - I can find one that works for me I'm sure - but I do have one question: is a belt required for holsters to work properly/safely? I HATE wearing a belt, but if that's the best choice, I'll do what I have to...

Most holsters require a belt. It also helps keep the weight of the gun from making your pants sag. A lot of people recommend getting a belt specifically made for carry a gun. They are a lot sturdier and more rigid than a regular belt. As far as holsters, thats really a personal preference. Whatever is most comfortable for you.

A carry belt is almost a have to have item for an OWB or IWB holster. If you get one get a good one that is made for holster carry. It makes a lot of difference. A IWB belt does not need to be quite as heavy duty as a OWB because the pants help hold the holster but a good one will be a lot more comfortable than cheap one.

You could pocket carry. There are several good weapons and holsters for this. I like the snubnose revolver and either the Nemesis or Mika pocket holsters. I have a little .32 Beretta semi auto that I sometimes slip into my pocket without a holster.

I wear an Uncle Mike's IWB holster with no belt everywhere I go. Haven't had any problems with it to date. I don't know what you'll be carrying though, so it may not work for you. I carry a CW9 as shown in my avatar.

Milt Sparks makes holsters that you can get an optional kydex clip that does NOT attach to your belt...it clips over the waistband of your pants...and even allows you to tuck a shirt in to further conceal your handgun.

I have a Versa Max 2 and like it.

I'm going to try to carry my old G22 - it's what I'm comfortable with and shoot best. I'm a pretty big guy (large frame, but could stand to lose a few pounds as well) so I'll try it an see.

Thanks for the responses - I believe I'll try without a belt to see if that works and invest in one if it doesn't.

This place rocks.
