Fat Spike

Seen several deer this morning and settled for this fat spike buck. He was walking straight toward me at about 75 yards and I put one in his chest with Muzzleloader. He's going to be good eating!

How right you are! I got my meat deer now, now I can hunt does and older bucks (maybe)! I got busted by a hoss this morning when I turned in my stand to get a shot. He was chasing a doe but still seen me move. Dadgummit!

Hey, I think I saw this one on the side of Old Trenton Road... Sure you didn't just toss this one in the back of the truck?

If you cook it right it isn't "gamey". I grew up on it and I absolutely love it. I love soaking mine in buttermilk for a little while then toss it in flour, salt, pepper then off to the fry daddy until golden brown. My Paw made it this way and would cook it for breakfast. I sure do miss his cookin. I cook it other ways but hard to beat it fried like that in my opinion.

some basics

- Field dress it quickly (Don't let it set around in the back of a truck)if you can
- drain it well removing as much blood as possible
-wash out the body cavity with clean water if possible
-get it cool, keep it cool
-don't handle/cut the scent glands (rear legs of bucks) when you are skinning or handling meat
-remove the fat
-scrub/rinse the blood off of meat when you cut/quarter (before you put in cooler for transport to processor)

Blood & fat turns rancid quickly.

paraphrasing Hunting101 - "it aint gamey at all when done right"
