Barrett M82A1

I am considering the purchase of a Barrett M82A1 .50 cal rifle. Do any of you guys own one of these, and can you recommend it? Also, I have noticed that there are two models available, one with a 29 inch barrel, and the other has a 21 inch barrel.

Does the .50 BMG lose enough velocity and energy through the 21 inch tube to make the 29 incher the only logical choice?

Thanks ahead for any advise or info!

No, I did not miss Joe's post, and that BA50 is a very nice rifle, as is the AR50. I am just interested in possibly investing in a semi auto .50 BMG rifle, and the M82A1 is the only example I know of.

Among other advantages, the magazine fed semi auto feature of the Barrett M82A1 .50 BMG is just one more feature to piss off the liberal communists among us!

Very true!

If you can afford one, own one I always say!

They have a newer caliber they developed as well (the son says he worked it up anyway) in .416 that reaches out there as well. Saw it on Future Weapons and the bald guy loved it! They just have not made it on the semi automatic frame yet (or haven't advertised it on the website yet)

I have a friend that has one. He loves it, I have shot it and it is awesome. Personally I cant afford one but if I could I definately would have one.

Get the longer barrel. The semi-auto is the best to shoot IMO as long as you are right handed. The .416 has some advantages and disadvantages, probably a flatter projectile, but it was essentially designed for the states and municipalities banning the .50. I predict the .416 will get more military use in the future.

A lot of the other .50's out there are cheaper for a reason, they aren't near as good. I've shot most of them and wasn't impressed with most of them.

I had a 82A1, traded it for an AI 338 Lapua... nothing wrong with the barrett, but the round isn't prown to pinpoint accuracy. kinda fun with the 338 to put 10 shots on a dinner plate sized target @ 1,000 yards. something I was unable to do with a 50 82a1

I have never shot the 82A but I have heard that they shoot about 5 MOA at 1000 yds. If you handload you can get a little better accuracy with a longer round. If you want a 82A buy it. If you buy something else you'll end up trading it for the 82 down the road.
