What do you love about your state?

In my introduction to this forum, I mentioned I'm from Minnesota. My fiance and I have decided that we want to move once we're married and once I get back from my deployment. After some considerable research, the leader of all the candidates on our list is Tennessee. Perhaps the greatest impetus for my recent determination to leave MN and head down there is what happened November 6th. I can't live in a state like this. Kieth Ellison is my representative for goodness sake! And he isn't going anywhere anytime soon.

What I like about TN is first and foremost are the apparent political leanings. After looking at the post election maps, it appears all but a few counties are red and not blue. Not a die hard republican, but it says something. Secondly, I've traveled around TN a few times and the countryside is beautiful. Minnesota doesn't tickle my fancy. Thirdly, certain things like the lack of a state income tax (from my understanding) and better hunting laws are very attractive.

What I have to offer your state is a hard working attitude and a desire to succeed. I won't be a waste of space there.

I'd like you guys to brag a little about your state if you don't mind. Please don't embellish, as I'm quite certain you have no need to do that. What makes you love your state?

Since I'm an outdoorsman, I love everything about Tennessee. I'd like to see the cost of hunting and fishing license come down some. I live in Clarksville right outside of Fort Campbell and really want to move east to the mountains.

It doesn't Shake and Bake like CA.
It is more Free then NY.
It does not have nearly as many[i] [/i]tornadoes as many other places.
No Hurricanes.
Currently like in a small city, but I can get back to the mountains any time I want.

I love being outdoors, and Tennessee offers ample opportunity for just about everything outdoors. One thing to remember about TN, though, it that the landscape and outdoors change so much from the eastern to western areas of the state. I, myself, am more partial to the mountains in the east.

Secondly, as you know, this is a gun forum, so I would be amiss if I did not mention the gun laws. There are certainly things many of us would like to see change about the gun laws, but I do believe that, when compared to many other states, TN is rather gun friendly.

Thirdly, I like the people here. Of course there are some a--holes, but in general, people are much more polite and hospitable than many other places I have been.

If you all do decide to move down here, I am sure you will find it to be a wonderful place to live. I have honestly never known anyone who did not like living in TN. The people I have known, who moved from the state, were always sad to go and eager to return.

I moved here about 10 years ago. I live in the East part of the state near the mountains. I have lived in a few Northeast states (MD, OH, MI, VA), KY and here. I have to say that KY is a close second, but I prefer TN. There is no state income tax or personal property tax. Sales tax is high, but you can control that with your spending habits. Costs me about $28 to get tags on my car every year.

The things I like the most are people 'round here are generally polite and courteous. The terrain is beautiful. I like the school systems for my kids where I am. Good river/lake fishing. Good hunting opportunities for deer, turkey and black bear plus other species. Short winters. We get an occasional snow sometimes in Dec, Jan or Feb but not every year. I have met all of my local elected reps at church before. If you drive a pickup truck down a country road, everyone will wave at you . Did I mention sweet tea?

Of course there are things that I dislike, such as paying $10 for a background check to buy a firearm, etc, but the good far outweighs the bad. Wecome! You'll enjoy it here.

When I move back to TN it will most likely be Knoxville or maybe Nashville. West TN does not appeal to me.

For the most part, people are friendly, especially in smaller towns. Low property taxes, no state income tax, no toll roads, great weather, beautiful mountains in a few different directions, beautiful lakes, low cost of living, great gun laws(or lack there of), occasional snow, outdoor attractions, light traffic compared to other states. Perhaps my favorite part is that fact that English is still the most common language and you don't feel like a foreigner in your own country.

Here in Orlando I often go into stores where I'm the only Caucasian. This wouldn't be so bad if people were actually friendly and said hello but few of my neighbors will even wave at me. I've been told I look like a "skinhead"

I'm convinced TN has to be one of the better states to live in when you compare everything it has to offer, specifically East Tennessee. I pray I can move back soon.

For somebody from Minnesota... THE WEATHER. You don't have to plug your car in to keep from breaking the door hinges in the winter.

I'm a Midwesterner, but have lived most of my life in Tennessee. You just can't beat it. I have lived around the country some, and always wound up back here. Come on down, and bring all your guns.

No state income tax, no local income tax and vehicle insurance is close to 50% cheaper than in KY. When I moved here in 2010 from KY, my take home pay went up roughly $500+ month (think this is the correct amount, been a while since I've thought about it)before the promotion kicked in. That's just an insane difference.

I welcome the 9% sales tax any day of the week over KY's 6% sales tax, 6.25% state income tax, a 1% occupational tax and 1.2% county tax

You can find about any type climate or terrain you'd like. West Tennessee is flat as a good billiards table, Middle Tennessee is rolling hills, while Mountains dominate East Tennessee. Beautiful lakes and rivers, an abundance of wildlife, and ever changing weather make Tennessee about as tolerable as anywhere I've been.

i was born and raised in W.VA. I will always be a Mountaineer. I came to TN at the tender age of 22. Having a bit of wonder lust, I have lived in AZ, NJ, LA, NY, AL and OH. All had their pluses and minuses. I came back to TN. Unlike my home state of W.VA., there is opportunity in TN. It has the mountains like W.VA. But more,. no income tax, economy not based on one industry. Great location. Mild winters, try upstate NY. for winter. Great outdoor recreation. And the people have always treated me nice.

Oak Ridge National Laboratory, or TVA.

we have seasons and the winter is not unbearable.

Other that this place is not much different than Illinois(not Chicago), Ohio or S. Florida.( other places I have lived.)

People here are stuck on barbecue and some nasty looking shade of orange.

And there are a lot of churches around these parts.

Already my top plan. I'd like to move to eastern Tennessee where there are some mountains. So far I've locked onto two TVA plants and Y12 as places for potential jobs. I don't imagine Oak Ridge would be very difficult for me to get a job there. The pay is good, equal to what I'm going to be making here at full pay (pretty good for a security guard).

Thanks to everyone who replied. All of the reasons you love the state are reason I find lacking to stay in Minnesota. I appreciate your comments and as they were all kind, it says something about the residents. I do hope that my 30 guns and I can find a more reasonable place to reside shortly. On that issue, has anyone encountered resistance to creating SBRs? Or any other NFA items? I'd like to get one, but general stupidity is an uphill battle here. Not that everything is illegal, its just that the misconception is that they are illegal, therefore a CLEO signature is pointless. I don't feel like going the trust route, not if I don't have to.

If anyone else has anything to add, I like to hear these comments. I'm surprised no one said history. That's one thing I like about TN as well.

I have only heard of a handfull of people having issues getting LEO sign offs for ANY class 3 item in TN, and it seemed that those people brought it on themselves by acting a fool in public giving them a bad rep. Nashville is a pretty liberal place and people seem like they have had no problems getting their paperwork signed off on there so I imagine just about anywhere you go in TN you should be fine,suppressors and SBR's have really seemed to take off in TN over the last few years. We have a class 3 section on the forum you should check out there are a lot of topics with a fair amount of valuable information there.

One question I have, that goes along with the op. I am starting to look for some land to summer at once I retire. My grand father had land in middle tenn. and it was a majical place. I cc 24/7, I find it troubleing that any business can put up a gun buster sign and disarm me. I hate the thought of leaving my weapon in the car. Here in Florida, the no gun signs ( Toy's r us is the only place I have seen one ) have no legal power and you can cc right pass them, same with restrauants that serve liquor and church's. Am I over thinking the amount of places that you can not carry or is it a real problem?
