Looking for suggestions on a AR15 in .22LR for my son as christmas gift. Been looking at the Smith and Wesson M&P 15-22. Any other suggestions or advice on makes and models of that weapon in .22 caliber?

M&P 15-22 is hands down the best .22LR AR off-the-shelf variant out there today.

I've got a Tactical Solutions dedicated upper that I love, but built that before the M&P came out. There are some benefits to an upper on a standard lower, but the M&P is a great dedicated .22.

I'll second that.

The m&p is a very nice gun but i bought my son a mossberg 715t flat top and for the money it is a very good rifle. We have put about a thousand round through it with no problems at all.

Santa brought my son a Colt/Umerex M4 carbine in 22lr for Christmas last year. It shoots great and looks good, but I don't like the way it is made. The barrel consists of a very thin inner barrel with a fake outer cover to mimic the profile of a real M4.

If I had it to do over again, I'd buy a Smith and Wesson.

For an ar15 model the Smith and Wesson is the way to go. They are pretty cheap and reliable. The sig 522 is also highly recommended and I have the swat commando version that I picked up off these forums. It's reliable as well but more expensive. The rail system was also cheaply made but that's expected on a cheaper 22 plinker. The stock folds which makes most people want to go to town with it and I believe it uses the same mags as the Smith and Wesson. The mock suppressor also adds a tacticool look.
