Layoff bomb detonates; Large corporations join small businesses in announcing mass cuts...

45 companies announce layoff's in the past 48 hours! This is what the people wanted!

Earlier today, Twitchy related some heartbreaking stories of small business owners laying off workers to avoid the economic impact of the Obamacare tax that isn’t a tax. Comedian Jon Lovitz, a small business owner himself, was no barrel of laughs either as his timeline filled with stories of impending downsizing. So, what about those big corporations? Boeing’s defense division announced yesterday it would cut 30 percent of management staff, and the company was not alone, we’re learning.

I predict unemployment is going to rise because a lot of employers were holding on by a thread that Romney would win and help the jobs and economy situation. :yes

At least two members here have mentioned they've been laid off this week.

HvyMtl, you need to let all these companies know how well the economy is doing, and maybe mention what a great deal Obamacare will be - that being the impetus for these closings. Show 'em some cherry picked graphs, that'll do it.
The second order effects, companies shutting down or downsizing due to losing corporate customers and the hit the economy is going to take just before the new taxes cut in are really going to be dramatic. Edited by Mark@Sea

Like all our brother opiners in this thread have observed. Everybody was holding their breath on this election (....businesses and folks that work for a livin, that is....) hoping Romney would win. He didnt. Everybody will simply adjust their business to accommodate the bad economic news for them. Some will lay off personnel, and keep tryin to work. Some will move to china (....Chrysler-Fiat -- jeep wrangler....). Big multinational companies will just do business in a more economically and regulatory friendly company and quit foolin with the usa. Some will sell their small businesses and put their money in their pockets.

The bottom line is that this is bad economic news for all the producers and those who want to produce in the usa. There's lots of folks that wont make it another 4 years in their businesses. They may quit and cut their losses. Lots of construction folks will be in bad shape. Miners will be in bad shape due to Nobamas's "War on Coal". Economic growth in this country will be on hold another 4 years due to idiotic regulations alone.

I have come to believe that we are Providentially blinded and are like the lemmings diving off the cliff. More than that, if ya dont jump off, the dammed government will try to throw ya off if they can. It's astounding to me how dammed dumb an Ivy League education can make most politicos.

I believe we're going to see a lot of businesses moved to Canada or Mexico, in addition to the ones downsizing.

Obama will probably figure out how to tax all their wealth away before they go. LOL

It's the calm before the storm. This stuff will only get worse. There were companies bribed by the administration
to not announce layoffs before the election. I guess specifically for that.
Posted
Yep.
Stupidest thing I've read today was comments from the left that these small business owners were firing people (getting below the 50 employee limit imposed by Obamacare) because they were racist, or just showing their displeasure over the results of the election.

One genius stated they should be sued by the ACLU.

Sorry, kids, you blew the fuse on the ice cream machine. Whining isn't gonna help.

Another closure... Target in Hickory Hollow....

None of this matters; those in power aren't worried because they all know they can keep blaming GWB and that the American public will believe it and of course, only the evil rich are invested in the market.

Yeah, but with Obamacare tax, etc., they know business was going to decrease, so no point in staying open in hopes. :)

It wont take too long before many get mad at the right people, when they had a job it's easy to swallow the propaganda but after a while of struggling just to survive, their bubble will burst and see who's really got them into this crap.
I do hate hearing about terminations and layoffs, I have friends and family affected by it over the last couple of years, my sister in law's job will be terminated within a few months, the company has hired a firm in Inda to do the same job for probably 1/4th of what they pay her and she's been with them for 25 years. There is no loyality to employees anymore. At least she and my brother was smart enough to get out of major debt and build themselves a decent savings, of course their 401K's I think are invested in the market which probably will really tank here soon.
Like I said I feel bad for those good decent people being affected by lay offs and terminations and I hate to be a pessimist but I see things getting much worse, and soon, it's going to affect all of us and if one of those idiot Obamatrons ever rant to me about it being Bush's and the evil corperations fault, and all us conservative whiteys are racist, well i'm not going to be very polite and civil to them so to speak. Not saying i'll automatically get physical with them, but if they get physical i'm definatly going to defend myself.

Does anyone have similar figures in the days/weeks/months leading up to the election?

I'm not saying some of these businesses didn't make changes because of Obama, but I've seen countless businesses lay off employees, move to other countires or go out of business when we all thought the economy was at its best. How much of the list above was going to happen eiher way?

I don't think anything in that area is profitable except gas stations and liquor stores.

Exactly. Best Buy closed their Hickory Harlem location a while back. And the mall? That's what happens when you close the projects in downtown Nashville, then force all the ghetto trash into the suburbs. Edited by TripleDigitRide
I'd wager most on that list were waiting to see who would be it before they finally decided. With taxes going up
on a down economy, that makes for a bad business plan when businesses are already struggling. Obamacare did
most of the damage, now that it looks like the "law of the land", like Mr. Boehner said.

I'm working with a head hunter that's trying to get me a job in the Tri-Cities and he spoke with a couple companies that said specifically that they were waiting for the outcome of the election before they hired any new positions. And as you can imagine they weren't hoping for Obama
Posted
Yeah, companies plan for things ahead of time. So yes, these layoffs and closings are certainly in response to the election.

Some interesting notes on Obamacare - it will affect people who are currently part time, as it defines full time as 30 hours a week. It affects companies with 50 or more employees, but it doesn't kick in at the 50th, it starts with the 30th employee. So this will pretty much shoot temp agencies in the head. It also means temps won't be able to survive, unless they can get 2 part time jobs with different agencies.
Posted (edited)
Just figured out why these places and dumping employees before January, the oversight committee said that in January, they must review all employees' work and if they worked more than 30 hours per week, then they're eligible for benefits or the penalty. (if they meet the 50 people requirement)

So I think the worst is going to be happening over the next 2 months Edited by Sam1
Posted
The most apparent will happen by the end of the year. The worst? Well, that will take a year or more to shake out. Greater unemployment, obviously... but second order economic effects will be both less obvious and have a greater impact.

That 'free' health care is gonna cost a lot of people everything.
