Of course the media is barely talking about it. I told my GF about it and she said "Why isn't our Govt doing something to stop that". This drew a lot of laughter from myself.

New Jersey is not/was not under “Martial Law”. If they were the Military would be running the show; the Military is not.
Of course there were curfews; there was wide spread looting and violence.

What is it you and your girlfriend would like the government to do.... walk away?

The National Guards ALWAYS shows up. It's common for them to lock down areas like barrier islands because that's where most of the real destruction happens. They locked down Perdido Key after Ivan. It's a GOOD thing.

No, clearly this is a case of the government attempting to strip rights away from people. That's what they do... wring their hands in dark smokey rooms, waiting for a natural disaster to happen so they can swoop in and do evil deeds.

Like they did during Katrina? I dont think they were under martial law either, but guns still got taken, and idiots still gave them up, and people still got taken to makeshift camps all while looting continued. There were even reports of police getting in on the action. How did they help again?

Not saying they should walk away, but perhaps go back and take a look at how these situations have been handled in the past. Another example of how FEMA was unprepared again, but yet gets millions upon millions of our tax dollars and their actions and response do not justify the cost of their operation as an emergency management agency.

Well, I've been through a bunch of those road blocks, since I wasn't subject to any curfews. I always left feeling like they were on my side. I'm thinking you've been to a hurricane or two, and understand what it's really like.

Katrina was an isolated case... thug mayor and cops. I don't think the National Guard had anything to do with that

Actually they did. Theres several articles and videos to document it. And the NG did take weapons, but many of them didnt like doing so, but still did it. My point being, if Katrina was an isolated case, then how many isolated cases does it take before it becomes a problem? or make it ok to do so? If martial law isnt declared, then how can the Constitution be suspended?

You mean the folks that have never been to a hurricane? It's hard to get a good feel by watching TV.

It appears the Unions are telling people that come to help to go home. How retarded.

ETA: oops. Now they say its ok to stay. Go figure. This is the level of garbage I was trying to imply. Edited by The Dude

Yes, we all know guns were illegally seized during Katrina. Many states passed laws to make sure that it wouldn’t happen again or at least if it did the people doing it would be in violation of criminal law.

Are guns being seized in New Jersey?

While everyone else was running away from that storm a group of young men and women ran towards it to help. They tried to help save lives, stop looting, and protect the possessions of those that had to leave. They have my respect, and they should have yours unless they give a reason otherwise. Thank God for people like them and shame on the people that whine about them helping out.

Haha, I know. I'm on Tapatalk so I don't get all the whizbang features.

But yes, I've been through quite a few hurricanes. Andrew was the worst I've seen. My guard unit was activated for relief operations following that storm. I wasn't in the unit yet, but was told all the stories by the guys that were there. Of course, most of the stories were about how much fun it was violating people's Constitutional rights, confiscating guns and taking part in the looting. That last sentence was the sarcasm kicking in. Seriously, the gov is going to send in the guard, FEMA and so on after a natural disaster. What else would the do?

I agree. And to be honest, its hard to say exactly whats going on up there at the moment. When guns were taken during Katrina, nobody knew about it until after the fact. The large media outlets never even reported it, but rather ignored it, as well as other problems.

But I respect those up there doing what they can, until like you said, they give us a reason to think otherwise.

Not that it wasn't real believable. I've dealt with the IBEW. They can be that way... usually are.

It came as no suprise to me though, as most everything is unionized up there.
