Should I get my C&R?

Okay, I'm undecided here... I have been debating on whether I should get a C&R or not. I've read the arguments for and against and I waffle on this issue more than a politician.

I have a huge interest in collector weapons. Specifically anything from WWII (especially German) or Civil War era. It is for these reasons I've considered getting a C&R. On the flipside, I'm a bit of a privacy nut... ask my friends, they'll tell you that I'm weird. I do have a HCP, so I realize my name is already in databases somewhere, but do I really want BATFE and my local Johnny Law to know that I'm collecting guns?

I'd appreciate your thoughts.

Absolutely yes IMO. Just having the C&R will eventually pay for itself if you are into older but not antique guns.

I personally wouldn't be bothered about the privacy hit at all.

If your worried about keeping the records indefinitely just don't renew and instead let it lapse and file for a new one.

I got mine and I don't particularly collect C&R weapons. You can get a discount with several companies like Brownells and Midway. Also, privacy is pretty much a non-issue in my book since you are posting this question on the Internet to be cached for eternity and accessible to the public and the government. You have a CCW, and I assume a Social Security card. If you buy anything from a. FFL, they have access to all of your info anyhow. There's not much more the government would be able to get from a C&R application.

My best advice is to look at some of the sites that sell C&R firearms (like aimsurplus). Check out the prices of things and decide how many of those you would actually buy during the life of the C&R. Don't count the things you'd like to have, but what you think you'd really purchase. Multiply that number by $25 (TICS and FFL fee if you didn't have a C&R). The difference between that and the C&R fee is your actual savings over paying for a transfer on every one.

Then decide if that savings is worth (a) the privacy and (b ) needing to keep a simple bound book for C&R eligible items. It's different for everyone. I wouldn't bother with it if you'll only really pick up 2 or 3. Just pay the transfer and move on.

If you buy gear/supplies/tools from Brownell's or Midway, they give C&R holders their dealer pricing, so that helps, but only if you actually shop there. Edited by monkeylizard

Your local Sheriff will file the notice someplace and never look at it. Unless you are in NYC or another socialist 'paradise', the local law enforcement looks at it as another stupid form the Feds have mandated.

I've been a C&R since 1998 and never heard a peep from ATF or local LE. You can destroy your records when the C&R expires, instead of sending them ATF like a FFL. That's what I do. Every three years instead of renewing, I start all over with a new book. Perfectly legal and I don't have to worry about whether I wrote an address or serial number wrong ten years ago.

To me, it's a 'no-brainer'. Minimal record-keeping, no more intrusive than a single TICS check, and one transfer every three years breaks even financially. When you add in dealer discounts from AIM, Midway, Brownells, Century, etc, the savings are pretty good!

Its 30 bucks for three years, how much waffling can you do?

I’ve saved hundreds of dollars with mine and I have never used it to buy a gun. I saved $140 on one scope.

Been a C&R holder for a while, never heard anything from Johnny Law. Guys that I talked to at the PD said they do an average of about 5 a month. They don't have time or the desire to pop over to my house and see my collection.

Just curious.... why you think it would have anything to do with the local PD or why they would have a clue as to how many checks the BATF is doing? They aren’t involved. Who is your local PD doing 5 checks a month on?

Sorry, should have clarified, local pd said they had about an avg of 5 C&R permits a month coming in to them.

All I was saying is that they don't want, or have, the time to come out and check and see how many guns I have at my house.
