Crazy first Wal-Mart gun buying experience...

I figured I would stop by WM to pick up my trout license so I could do a little fly fishing this weekend and while I was there I started eying up the .22LRs. I saw they had a Savage .22LR for $117, so I figured what the heck, I should get a cheap .22 to plink around with. Anyways, while the clerk is getting my fishing license and running my background check for the rifle, things start to get interesting. This kid (probably around 19 or so) walks up to the counter and asks if they have any shells...the clerk asked what for and he said one of those guns and pointed to the shotguns in the case. The clerk said, "yea, we have all kinds of shells for those guns." The kid then asks if he needs a background check to purchase the ammo and the clerk said no, then he asked about a background for the gun and the clerk said yes. He then proceeded to ask the clerk to run a check for him to buy a shotgun (kid has no idea what he wants) and the clerk said he would do it after he finished with me. The kid then paces around a bit and said "this is gonna take forever" and then walks off. I'm sitting there talking to the clerk and the kid walks back w/ 2 bottles of Coleman white gas, matches and a baseball bat. He then mutters something about setting the place on fire and he takes a full swing at the shotgun case from beside the counter, but stops short of the glass and walks off. Me, the clerk and a couple customers are like WTF just happened. After that, the clerk called the manager and he followed him around while waiting on the police. 3 officers showed up and I'm not sure what was said, but the police told the manager that the kid had called 911 11 times saying that the Wal-Mart was going to be on fire. Needless to say he was escorted away. The kid was definitely on drugs or something...

It was definitely a weird occurrence and I'm wondering what would have happened if somehow that kid was able to buy a shotgun. I wouldn't have even ran a check on him based on his initial behavior. Oh well, just wanted to share my news of the weird!

HAHA! Yeah I love WM in the wee hours myself!

I wonder if this guy had been approved and everything went his way,if he would have tried to kill him self? Which brings up the fact that he obviously knew nothing about guns, and he would have used birdshot. So really I guess he would have probably survived, been a bloody mess, but survived.Man would he had been sorry!

Chances are he was looking to inflict harm to others, not himself, hence the burning the place down comment....He may have just loaded the shotgun with the shells recomended by the clerk and went nutz....

BrandonTN- I certainly hope you were packing!!!

But no, that couldn't have happened, they escort you out the door with your new rifle thus making sure you aren't going to go on a rampage inside the store.:D

I was in Wally Weird one afternoon picking up some ammo to head to head out shooting and I got caught up with the guy behind the counter. He,like me, had just recently got his permit and was complaining about not being able to carry it at work. I jokingly told him I had mine and if anything happened I'd back him up while he loaded a shotgun.

Not a minute later this kid walks up holding an empty magazine. He completely interrupts our conversation, shoves the magazine towards the clerk and says "I need da bullets for dis." The clerk looks at me and then looks back at the thug and says "Sir, what caliber ammunition do you need?" The guy goes " I don't know man. Whateva bullets dis thing takes." The clerk tells him he can't sell him ammo without him knowing what caliber the firearm takes, for safety purposes. The guy gets mad and walks off. The clerk turns to me and I'm just standing there shocked and he deadpans "You wanna hang here for a minute while I grab that shotgun." Another day at Wally Weird.

What is weird to me is that Wal-mart selling guns. There are 3 close to me and none of them sell guns anymore. The glass case now house BB guns.
