I think they guard it in order to hold at bay an individual's greatist fear: being forgotten. Every life counts and the sacrifices made COUNT. No one wants to fade away and be forgotten. I have lost loved ones and it seems like the world will never go on without them, yet somehow it does. So I guess everyone can fade eventually, but in those instances the family remembers. The unknown solider does not even have a name. The guarding of the tomb insures that despite not having a name, they will not be forgotten.

This ceremony is in my top 10 list of things to do in 2013 also.

I've seen the Changing of the Guard ceremony, though it was many years ago. Sobering even to a bratty teenager. The seriousness with which they go about their duty is palpable.

I believe the pictures are from the storm in September. I read an article that the Guard was on station during Sandy, but had changed to BDU's and did not want to be photographed.
