Hunting Rules & Regulations

I've never gone hunting before but I've been considering it lately. I got on the computer today and did some research. Is it just me or is understanding all the state laws, rules, and regulations NOT worth going hunting?

I don't understand why they make it so complicated. I was a police officer for a little while so I did a lot of studying on criminal law. Right now I'm in college and studying criminal justice. After about 15 minutes on the TWRA website I've given up and would rather go target shooting than even attempt hunting. I'm sure the actual act of hunting is difficult enough as it is with out all the rules and regulations.

What are you hunting that is so hard to understand? I've always found it to be fairly straight forward on bag limits and regs.

It is complicated, more than necessary, to the point that the opinions and understanding of field officers who enforce regs can easily differ.

However, this years guide is only 72 pages, compared to last years 96 (88 year before that).

I can understand how it is overwhelming for someone that didn't grow up hunting. However, I believe that a Hunter Safety Course would help you understand the basics. It would also be easier to figure out what you want to hunt and focus your efforts there. Depending on where you plan to hunt makes a lot of difference also, private or public land.

I told myself I've given up the idea. After purchasing a new bolt action rifle, my desires have changed. I would like to know about hunting deer. Do I need to take a hunter education class to hunt on private land? If I AM required to take the class will I learn everything I need to know as far as rules and regulations? If answered yes to both questions, I'll take it from there. Thanks!

Likely yes and mostly yes.

Born on or after January 1st 1969 then you arnt required to take the course...although you should. You will learn a ton! Edited November 20, 2012 by Slappy
