"Useless" guns

Recommended Posts

So I'm sure we've all got one or two lurking around, I'm talking about those guns that serve absolutely no real purpose except helping to fill the gun shaped holes in our lives.

You've got nicer, more collectible, far more practical choices yet still you like them for what they are and maybe are not.

Lets see your "useless" guns!!

Here are mine: a Stoeger double defence I recently acquired from G&L mainly because they were having an awesome sale on them and also because I just liked them. I could have gotten a used 870 but, I didn't. Instead I went with something a bit different.

Beneath that I have my Nagant revolver. I went and spent the extra little bit to get a CCCP(SSSR to us Americans) marked ones because I wanted have something cool and historical. It's a neat gun but between having to order ammo online and the outrageous trigger pull, meh I doubt I'll be shooting it soon if ever.

The tactical double barrel is cool looking and all, but it seems to be a solution waiting for a problem. There are much better options to be had, the used 870 for example, or a Saiga 12. But the coolness factor would probably induce me to pick one up, too. The Nagant is just a cool pistol with historical significance. You could order a .32acp cylinder for it and make it a lot cheaper to shoot, though. As for the heavy trigger pull, there are things you can do to take care of that, or have a smith do it, or just shoot in single action, which was probably what most soldiers that used them back in the day, did.

Enjoy both though! I could see the double barrel being a good bushcraft gun.

Those useless guns are so far back in my safe, I am too lazy to move the 10 or 20 guns in front of them to take a picture to show here, but I know what you mean (heirlooms, love them, but can not use them or get rid of them). I think I have a couple of double barrels, a couple of old 22 rifles, and a few single shot shotguns. Oh, I have a pistol or two, good plinkers, but old and that is it.

I'm sorry but the term "useless" when used to describe a gun is about as foreign to my vocabulary as "unwanted" is when used to describe attention given by a pretty girl. I have firearms that do not serve a practical purpose (double barrel, sawed off shotgun) but by no means are they useless. Now on the other hand, I can post some photos of relatives that fit your description.

The two at the bottom are 101 Savages. If you aren't familiar with them, although they appear to be a revolver, the cylinder is fake, and they are actually a single shot 22LR. I don't see any real utility to a single shot 22 handgun other than the cute factor.

For overall effectiveness, I would agree. However, a legal length double is quite a bit shorter than a pump and easier to maneuver room to room (unless you cut down the stock).

Hence the quotation around useless, of course their not totally useless just the less usefull out of what you own. Runco and Greg I think have the right idea. Those Savages are functional I presume therefore usefull but when viewed next to say a single six not so much.

For my picks I will undoubtedly find a use for the double barrel beyond range toy and the Nagant is an important part of my growing collection so it's got it's own purpose. Still pretty "useless" though.

Now I'm sure there's more out there, lets see em guys.

In my collection, useless means, they are really outdated, serve no real purpose other than a footprint in the safe, and no longer fun. However, if my old Fulton double barrel was all that I had for hunting, homedefence, etc, obviously the dust would be blown off, moth balls removed, and it would be re-activated for use and would no longer be a useless gun. But when I have ARs, Remington 700s, Winchester 1300s, Browning O/Us, Other Semi Autos, Sigs, Glocks, etc. in arms reach, the old fulton is kinda of useless, and is more of Antiqutie deserving for a red neck museum or something with a story line, "...this was my dad's father's first squirrel gun, and placed a many of meat on the table...".

While no firearm that actually throws a bullet without harming the shooter is "useless", I sold the only one I had that most nearly qualified, a .38 special derringer:

Hard to cock (almost impossible with one hand), slow to deploy since safety on is a good idea, very heavy for its size, 50 lb trigger pull, can potentially fire while loading if not placed on half cock first, extremely limited accurate range, etc.

Other than that, was a fine firearm, and always went boom.

I think the term "Useless" in this connotation might be better to be thought of as impractical.

That's about right, probably should have said impractical.

Yours however is totally BA! I've wanted a broomhandle since I was probably five or so.

Color me jealous.

I'd probably trade something a bit more "practical" for one of those.

I have a Carcano I'd consider useless. A box of ammo is worth more than the rifle, and you could throw it more accurately than you could shoot it. Shoot a mag full from it, and you'd agree that theres no way Kennedy was killed with one.

I will be more then happy to take anyones useless firearms off their hands. Especially that stoeger ;)

Sent from secret underground bunker

Eh not quite that useless. :)

Here's another one that's actually worse than the previous two.

A Star model B in 9mm. I really really like this gun, it's accurate comfortable and relatively cheap to shoot but its just not reliable.

The 9mm model Bs were originally designed around the 9mmLargo and when they changed them over to the 9mmLuger they only changed the barrel/chamber using the old Largo magazines. The Largo is just a bit longer than the Luger and regular 9mm does not feed well from the magazine. I have found that it works best if I slap the magazine a few times to get the rounds to sit flush but its still a crap shoot. It either tries to feed two at a time or raises the next round which makes extraction all but impossible.

Damn shame too, I really want to love it as a shooter but its just not reliable.

Here's a pic showing the gap in between the nose of a bullet and the wall of the magazine.

I have a Spanish copy of a smith in 32-20. It was made during the Spanish civil war( just before ww2). A friend of my Father in-law went over there and joined the communist to fight the Nazis back in the 30s. He brought it home and eventually gave it to my father in-law. In 1985 he walks into the living room and dropsit and its gun belt in my lap. He says" You need a good gun while you are running up and down the road like that" (we lived in SC at the time)

He would not even let his other two son in-laws look at his guns.He died a few years after that.

A few of my wife's cousins over the years had tried to modify it and basically ruined it.They tried to change it from a single to a double action. The barrel is noticeably bent to the right. It is unsafe to fire. It is barely worth the going rate for scrap metal, but there is not enough money in the world to buy it from me.

As I told my wife there are three classes of guns. 1 Havin guns. Those that fit this catcategory. 2 Shootin guns. Those that you love to shoot and would never think fo getting rid of. 3 And Tradin guns. Those that you keep because they are a good investment and you are willing to trade or sell for the right price.

Useless guns are ones which cannot shoot, are dangerous to shoot, or are so unreliable they cannot be used for their purpose.

These are ones which serve a purpose. They have value, collectability, and history. I think you were looking for "safe queens." ;)

Anyway, if anyone of you guys think they are useless, I will gladly take them off your hands.

Had a Nagant revolver. Finally found a box of .32SW to shoot through it. Was accurate, but the trigger and main springs must have come off a one ton truck. Not a pleasure to shoot.
