Do people rent land to train?

So, I spectated a 3 gun match last weekend, and I'm hooked and would like to participate in the next match coming up next month. I'd like to have somewhere to train up and sight in my new scope, but the only place near Memphis that even gets close to what I need is MSSA. However, charging $600 for the first year's membership seems extreme when I could do just fine with almost any old field. So my question is, do people rent private land to train? I've seen people lease land for hunting, so it didn't seem too hard to fathom someone leasing for target practice. Am I completely off base? Would it be a waste to post in the classifieds here or craig's list?

Desoto Rifle and Pistol Club located in Como, MS has a $100 fee to join and $150 a year dues. They have 3 pistol ranges, 200 and 600 yard rifle ranges.

If I may, let me throw in my two cents.... I am a small land owner and also lease property for hunting so I can see your question from a couple of directions. If someone leases land for hunting he or she can expect to have only 10 or 12 shots by hunters on the property per season. Target is a whole different critter. By no means do I wish to rain on your question. It will just be a little more effort on your part to do it. Gotta consider the legal issues.

People may do it, but I would say that most land owners do not want random, unknown people doing action shooting sports (which require a certain amount of careful due to the running around and such) on their land unsupervised. Most would not even want you plinking on their land unsupervised.

Now, a friend might let you do it.

I've been thinking about just buying some land in rural Shelby or Fayette County so I can have my own little fun and gun, maybe one day build a house. Having your own place, or knowing some who does, is the only way to do it. The kind of dynamic, real-world drills and training I like to do are probably not accepted at most ranges. Would have to look into getting a berm put in and other legal/liability issues.

All good feedback. Good points about legal issues, and from an owners perspective it does seem like there is a lot more worry/risk for the return. Maybe I'll try the suggestion for the Desoto club this weekend and see how that goes. At least I can sight in my scope.
