Edible Plant Class

After reading the other edible plant topic I decided to see if anyone had enough plant knowledge to share and maybe do a class. Im sure alot of us could benefit from it. It is a lost art I would like to learn more about. Most people nowdays rely too much on stores and fast food. including me. We would all be better off if we could learn to be more self reliant. I can hunt but a man cannot live on meat alone and garden crops may not always do well. Thats when we could rely on ol' mother nature to provide. Is there anyone that may have the time and knowledge to contribute? Ive done my recearch online and the majority of the plants just look like poison ivy to me. If someone could demonstrate the dos and donts it would help tremendously.

I would suggest buying a Boy Scout handbook & checking out some of their field & survival books. There are other books on the market, but those are a good starting point. They don't have everything, but are full of great information, like which plants to stay away from. I once took a survival class when I was in Boy Scouts, but need a refresher course since it's been over a decade. I do remember eating "cattail" roots, berries, and making tea from wild tea berry leaves on a couple of outings with my dad when I was a teenager. He was a Boy Scout leader for several years and knows a lot about edible and non edible plants. He grew up in the mountains in a large and poor family and they had to know how to get extra food & hunt or go hungry sometimes.

There are several good, handy books available to cover alot of what you are looking for. As I look through my stash of books I will post the titles and links about the books as I can find them

The 1st one I grabbed is "Edible Wild Plants A North American Field Guide" by Thomas S. Elias and Peter A. Dykeman

Teaching a class like that is my dream job, but I am a slave to regular work. I keep hoping my wife becomes a bank president so I can quit and do whatever...

Hope that works out for you. If you ever have some free time just give a holler and ill be more than happy to be a student.

I have done several programs on edible and medicinal native plants. Two of my Rangers and I are working on a whole series of programs based on self reliance. If there is enough interest I will get one of my Rangers to set up a computer file of some sort with the programs. When we get a schedule of the programs I will post it.

I would definitely be interested as well!

I got an email from Amazon and the plant books I was looking at are on sale. I throw this out here in case anyone is looking for said books, the sale could save them a few bucks.

It might be a bit of a drive, but Sigma 3 in Fort Smith Ark has a great plant walk three times a year. This way you see the plants in all stages of growth (they often look different at different times of the year). They cover about 60 edible, medicinal and poisonous plants each time.
