Sierra Matchking for deer hunting

Recommended Posts

I am hand loading for my .308 bolt gun. I have a hunt in November I'm trying to prepare for and my rifle does really well with Matchking but I've heard that they don't do well in hunting applications. I'm using 180 grain bullets. Anyone have personal experience or know something about it? Thanks

It will work. From what i understand the matchking may fragment more than a traditional hunting bullet like the core loct or even the 180 sierra Game king.

If it does well with the MatchKings, it will likely do equally as well with the equivalent weight GameKings. I shoot a fair number of both out of my 700LTR.

Why take the chance? Load for a bullet you know is going to perform.

I have never had any experience with the Gamekings. Pretty good bullets?

For deer, they are top shelf.

Yep, just as you imagine. The same great flight as Match Kings, but built for expansion, won't explode on impact.

Now...the million dollar question...where can a man find said Gamekings? I have looked at Gander Mtn in Turkey Creek and a couple places in Maryville in the past week or so to no avail. I guess I may have to order online. Thanks to all for the knowledge

Yeah I don't know anyone in Knoxville that will have them. I'm pretty sure Sportsmans Warehouse in Chattanooga carries them, but that's a haul for bullets.

Remington Core Locts, Hornady Interlocs, Speer Hot Cores, and many others will make excellent deer bullets as well. No need to spend the extra $ on premium bullets for deer sized game.
