Sorry, another Mosin question.

Ok guys I have had a C&R licence for a couple years now and still haven't got around to getting one of these. I know very little about what to loook for.

Any way somebody was wanting to trade one to my brother yesterday so he brought it to me. Sure I knew it was Mosin, but that was it. He said it was a sniper rifle made in '41. Now I know the sniper versions are a little more of value.

Ok, so here's my question how do you tell the difference between a plain round or hex, and a sniper? Just what makes it a sniper? This perticular rifle didn't have the scope, but i guess that it could have been taken off not sure. I looked at my SOG paper after I got home last nite and from the pics, the only difference I could see in it was the scope and that it looks like the bolts are bent. Just could be that pic.

And I know I should have one or ten by now but just haven't made the leap. Maybe after my daughter gets married next month, if there is any money left, lol, I'll pick up a couple.

Thanks

there are repro snipers where people took a mosin and made it into something that resembles the russian sniper.

One of the first clues, of course, is the russian scope sitting on it. These scopes are UGLY things sitting on an UGLY mount.

I have no list of things to use to tell if it is a fake or not though and was unable to find such a list.

Thanks Jonin, like I said this one didn't have the "ugly scope or mount". I just know nothing much about them and am just wanting a little insight.

without the scope and mount its already never going to be an original sniper. Whether it once was or not, I dunno. Try asking on gunboards --- the guys there seem to know how to tell, if you have good pictures.

Back then, a sniper rifle was not made special. They took a crate of guns, shot them, picked out the best ones (smooth actions, good grouping, whatever else) and stuck a scope on them, bent the bolt so it could be used with the scope in the way, and called it good. The same is true for most other sniper rifles of that era, this is a generalization not specific to mosins. If the russians did anything more, I am not aware of it.

original sniper will have a sn stamped on the left side of the reciever for the scope. repo snipers will not have this. if no scope is on it and it has a straight bolt you can look inside of the reciever and see where it was pluged.also original scopes will have round headed screws and repos will be flat.ww2 rifle with post war replacement scope
