i use the 17hmr on grounghogs, very deadly out to 200 yards. if you are hunting meat ,i dont recommend the 17 unless you can get a head shot. at 100 yds or less it is too destructive of the meat.

Watching that video it seems to me that he is shooting the .22lr at an empty can and the 17hmr at a can filled with water. Sure sounds like water spraying the ground after the shot with the .17. If that is the case then it is not a fair test. I can blow up a coke can filled with water with a .22 LR.

That said I also do not believe the .22lr vs. the 17hmr is a fair test. The 17 has a much larger cartridge.

Never have shot a .17, doubt buying one is in my future.

another 17 hmr here... mines a marlin as well.

whats not to like? accurate, no recoil, minimal barrel heating, good for past 100 yards. Ammo is a touch pricey but..

if you want anything much more than that, its time for a 22 hornet anyway.

Only thing that annoys me is if your punching paper for groups, you probably need a spotting scope to see the holes..

had a .17. Killed 1 bobcat at 59yrds, 1 skunk at 30 yards, 1 coyote at 40 yards running, 1 coyote at 50 yards. Beauty of this round is you can put one of those screamers in a 'yotes ear at 150 yards no problem if you can hold it on him.

Bobcat killed dead, shot right behind the shoulder, rolled it.

skunk killed dead

#1 coyote, a pup, killed dead

#2 coyote looked sick, shot him in the ear, killed dead.

I had to sell it for a little extra cash. Wish I had kept it. I will have another one. Had a Marlin. VERY hard trigger. Never had it improved.
