The allure of .17 rifles

I don't get it. These .17 rifles are being made by everyone, and apparently selling well. What can these bb guns do that I can't already do as well with my trusty old .22? Not that I'm against anyone buying one! No, if that floats your boat, go for it! I'm just surprised, that's all.

Shoot straighter, farther?

I have one of these. It's a great little gun.

Greater accuracy, flatter trajectory, and 2550 ft/sec.

Yep, its a long debate with no winner in sight... the 22wmr vs 17hmr.

To sum it up, the 22wmr is more impact force and the 17hmr has more velocity and flatter trajectory. If your hunting small game, the 17hmr would most likely tear your kill in half, where the 22wmr would leave a clean kill in my experience. I like both myself... the 17hmr hands down for precise target shooting though.

The 17hm2 isn't as good and I don't see it being popular long/at all in my opinion. The 22lr will probably ever be topped for plinking.

Long live .22LR. Though i've never shot a 17mm I have some freinds that love them. Dead on 150yds+. I just have not bought one yet but it could be in the future. I have a few others to get first.

I bought a cheap Savage and love it. I bought the BSA scope designed for the .17 and I am getting 1-2 inch groups at 300 yards.

i have the savage as well and really like it, however i might have been happier getting a 10/22T instead

I hope this link works but this sure makes me want one of these

I bought the Marlin which was the test bed for th 17HMR. It will group 1" at 200 yds.

Not bad for a 160.00 rifle. It is a fun rifle to shoot.

I have 3 10/22's and I like the .17 better More fun to shoot. Higher but more fun.

I also have a Savage .17, its accurate to 200+ yards. I have never had a .22 that shoots that well. The .17 kills critters like the plague at long range.

Probably the most accurate rimfires but I like the 22's better for hunting.

The videos on youtube of a .17 round versus a 22lr round show the destructive force of the .17 to be superior. They are touted as the small varmint innards liquefier.

I agree that I love my 22 (10/22 with lots of goodies), but I'm pretty certain I'll be picking up a .17 really shortly.

So, velocity is more effective than the little bit of extra mass in the .22 bullet. Interesting. I guess my high school physics teacher was right.

The .17 rimfires and the 22 WMR are jacketed rounds while the 22lr is lead or copper coated. The jacketed rounds will sometimes go thru without killing immediately, less expansion. Not saying they are bad just have to have a killing hit for hunting or you will lose game. The .17 are very accurate, much more so than the 22's but I like the 22's especially the 22lr better for hunting myself, just personnal probably because it is what I grew up with.

That video is not a fair comparison IMO.

The 17hm2 would've been more relevant to the 22lr and the 22wmr vs 17hmr.
