Good point, and while I appreciate your input (giving me more to consider), I now hate you for broadening my horizons...

hehe

Seriously, thanks.

That's just one of many reasons I'm here! :D

I am really sold on the Saiga in .223 as HD and fun plinking gun. ... And the round is better for inside the house as well.

Really! I'm not arguing; I'm surprised. I've never shot a 7.62X39, but the .223 is LOUD! I can't imagine letting that off inside the house, and feel sorry for our soldiers that have to do this. After shooting .223, I don't think I want any rifle round going off inside.

And as far as a gun to meet all the OP's criteria, Rabbi is right. Marlin 30-30 lever can't be beat. Everyone needs one. Relatively inexpensive to buy and to shoot with a tried and true action.

I have a Saiga 7.62 purchased from Rabbi and for what a 1000 rounds cost I didn't give it a second thought. I can shoot all I want and not feel like I'm going broke.

It's much more accurate than what I expected, I've only shot it out to 100 yards but I have no complaints.

Well to be honest, I don't want any gun going off in my house.

I'm pretty sure you can use any centerfire cartridge.

The hunting guides say you can't use anything .22 and down. I've never seen a distinction in centerfire vs. rimfire.

The law on hunting with.223 is now a go in Tennessee. You can hunt with it.

Im opting you go with the .223. I think thats why the Russians went with the smaller centerfire round in their Krinkovs. Correct me if Im wrong on the ballistics of the round (more tissue damage caused by tumbling). 5 of my rifles are .223 FN FS2000, STG 556, SL8/G36K, AR-15, and soon to be Bulgarian Krinkov.
