Ammo Shrapnel?

If they are plated as some say, then that may explain why they are usually a little cheaper than WWB. (By a few bucks/pack for .40 and several bucks/pack for .45.)

Of course they're plated, that's how you apply a copper jacket to a lead bullet. The devil is in the details however, plating can be a very touchy process. Sounds like they've had issues with their baths.

Thanks. I didn't realize that. The Taurusnet post made me think some jackets were "real."

I was hit with some the last time I shot at Gun City. That will be the Last time I shot there too.

I've been hit with shrapnel at Gun City myself. But it was because I wasn't following the rules. I didn't have the target ran out far enough and my rounds were actually hitting the floor first, then the backstop.

I like Gun City. Yeah, it's kinda dumpy. But I like keeping the old guys in business......

I'm pretty certain that a copper jacket isn't "plating" on most rounds. It's a thin layer of copper metal that is wrapped around the lead core. Plating actually causes the copper to adhere through a chemical process that bonds the copper to the base metal (think gold plating or nickel plating). Some rounds - like most hollow point rounds - clearly have a metal outer layer. I have several rounds recovered from ballistic vests that have clearly separated from the copper jacket, which I also have. I have some cheap bullets for reloading that are copper plated, but the purpose of a copper jacket is to hold the round together in flight and many times after hitting the target as well.

Jacketed rounds are swagged, are they not?

Must be very thin on the copper to do this.
