New or used Rossi m92 lever action 357 rifle?

Gonna buy a Rossi M92 357/38 lever action rifle.I can get a new one for $460 OTD,or have found some used ones for $450 to $500.Which one would be a better rifle one with or without safety?The used ones I've found don't have the safety,but are usually higher price.One with the safety is fine with me.Is there any other advantages to the older presafety rifles?

Useless device on a well-designed lever-action. Folks have been using the M92 design for 120 years without a safety. If there is a round in the chamber, put it on half-cock. The only truly effective safety device is the one between your ears.

Actually, I've changed my mind. The safety on a Winchester or Marlin type lever action is an excellent flinch detector. I can't tell you how many times I've seen a person squeeze the trigger and flinch only to find out the safety was on.

An empty chamber is also a pretty good indicator as well.

I say find the cheapest one you can and buy it. Safety or no safety it is the shooter that determines whether a gun is safe. Relying on a safety to be safe will result in an accident eventually.

It's a matter of preference. Some people obviously have a strong preference. My Marlin 1894C has a crossbolt safety, which never gets used. If you don't care then buy whatever you can get that's cheapest. If you decide you have a preference then you have choices. Choices are good.

While I prefer a lever gun without a safety, the Rossi setup doesn't really impact performance like the Winchester cross-bolt can. I have both, and wouldn't shy away from a good deal on the Rossi with the safety.

When I was 19 or so a idiot came around the corner and pulled the trigger on a 22 with Rat shot.

The night before He did the same to His brother from across the room, no worries, He said it was a blank.

I was less than 3 feet away, still have shot in my arm, in my chest wall and on my hip.

I get a cheast x-ray and have to tell the Doc the story.

Yall are right, a safety does not keep a firearm safe we do, how ever we have to

careful what we tell someone to buy and how to use it.

One thing about a Marlin, it can be put into false half cock and the gun can fire if trigger is pulled or hammer struck from that position. In that case the cross bolt safety could be a life saver.

I guess Winchester and Rossi models are same?

I was going to post that a safety on a lever action is like a screen door on a submarine - and you already had. I wouldn't refuse to buy one if I were looking for one and the safety was the only thing 'wrong' with it (and I do consider a safety on a lever action to be 'wrong' - but I put up with a safety on a SA revolver with my Heritage so it wouldn't necessarily be a deal breaker) but I certainly wouldn't opt in favor of the safety if there were a choice.

There is an aftermarket pin that you can use to replace the safety on the Rossi's. Get what is cheapest. If you don't want a safety remove it.

I will tell you that my Rossi 357 doesn't shoot nearly as well as my 1894 Marlin in 44 mag. I like the looks and smooth action of the 92, but feel the Marlin is a mich better gun. Your mileage may vary.
