Other than just setting the record what was the point of the jump? Colonel Joe Kittinger did almost the same jump in 1960 or 1961 with much less technology and no hoopla. I'm not trying to diminish the recent jump but was it just for the record or was there something to be learned?

When they did the first jump I think it was to test the suit (and other tech) that they were planning to use for the space program.
