Iron sights on Remington 597??

Recommended Posts

I picked up a 597 a year or two ago from a guy at church and am wanting to add iron sights to it. The problem is I can't find the part numbers or anyone that carries the set. Brownell's has the rear but not the front. Any advice?

It seems that alot of them don't even come with iron sights now.

Depends on the model:

The ones with bull barrels don't even have dovetails and/or taps for irons, AFAIK.

Uh oh. I am pretty sure mine has the holes tapped with screws in them but I will have to double check. I sure hope so.

Regular rear sights for standard 597 fit in dovetail in barrel.

The receivers on all of them have screw holes for scope base and/or have built in rail for tip off type rings. Some models have weaver scope base already added, may be built into receiver, can't tell. There are various weaver based iron sights that fit scope bases too, but if the barrel doesn't have screw hole for front sight, dunno how you'd add one short of getting it drilled and tapped.

I've got the bull barrel 597 with rails cut into the receiver and there are no dovetails on mine...

Thought about having someone do the work but considering how inexpensive these are I could probably buy a second one with open sights for close to the cost of having them put on. PSA was having a sale on them with open irons for a whopping $119. Even after shipping and transfer costs that's a hell of a deal.

Strictly MHO but I think the 10/22 would make a better truck gun. I really like my 597 and all but Ruger makes a more durable firearm for tossing in the truck and not caring if it gets banged up. Plus their 25rd mags actually work.

Did you get the scope that came stock from Remington? I've thought about upgrading it but so far haven't come up with a good reason to justify the cash spent. Is the Leopold that much better that I should pick one up?
