Ankle carry of all steel revolvers

Recommended Posts

Howdy all,

So I have been carrying a smith 442 everyday in a Galco Ankle Glove holster for almost two years (as a backup) now and am thinking of switching to a model 640 (all steel).

I have a decent collection of j-frames, but none that are all steel.

Does anyone have any experience carrying a full steel j-frame versus an 'airweight'?

I tried to simulate the weight difference (don't laugh) by clipping two folding knives that were 5oz a piece to my ankle rig today, I did not notice much of a difference in my rather unscientific test.

Not really looking for a debate about the merits of an airweight vs all steel. I simply like the all steel 640 quite a bit and that's about it.

While not a steel J-frame, I carried a Glock 26 in a Galco ankle holster for about 2 years. Weight wise, the 26 loaded with 10+1 of 125gn HP's is somewhat similar to a 640 with 5 rounds 158's. All in all, it got to the point where I'd actually forget that I was wearing it. Adding the calf strap made it pretty much disappear and kept it from slipping down and rubbing the ankle bone.

Overall, there will be a barely noticeable difference in the steel vs. airweight, but you should adapt very quickly.
