Ruger American thoughts?

I'm trying to get something for my 10 year old to take deer with and saw this at BPS.

I wasn't real impressed, but it seems to get good reviews on the internet. Am I just finding people that are giving it props because Ruger advertises with them or is a really decent rifle that will start climbing in price quickly.

The funny thing is that I thought the removable magazine was cheap, but all the review seem to rave about it.

Does anybody have first hand experience with them?

No experience with the rifle, but Ruger's rotary mag has proven its merit over long decades in both the .22lr line and in the 77 series, don't see why would be any less capable in the American Rifle line.

It is a great rifle for what it is-an inexpensive rifle with several accuracy enhancing features. Sort of like the old Rem 788. I have handled several and it feels good on the shoulder in shooting position to me. But I am waiting for a 22-250 version to buy. TTT

It is what it is... It's a cheap hunting grade bolt gun and it should serve your son very well. It's competition is the Remington 770 and the Savage Axis, and imo I would pick it over the other two.

I honestly have thought about doing this same thing for my 13 year old, unfortunately he is already started to develop some gun snobbery lol..... (little more money and the Howa is also a pretty decent option, great trigger, better stock and out of the box pretty accurate).
