Wireless router advice needed

I won't buy a WAP without checking to make sure they've written the DD-WRT firmware for it. One of the functions they add that the factory couldn't be bothered to include (in most cases) was the ability to configure the device as a bridge or a repeater. OP, if the old device is, say, a WRT54G?, you can load the DD-WRT firmware on it, configure it as a bridge and install it in the bonus room and run all the wireless devices in the bonus room on a separate subnet, and let the old device (with the DD-WRT firmware on it) beam the signal from the bonus room devices back to the gateway WAP.

If you're running that many wireless devices, I take it you're pretty tech-savvy, and neither the flashing nor the simple subnetting would be especially technically challenging to you. In fact, the DD-WRT website has its own forum that can coach you through just about anything like that you can think up.

You've already got the old device, and the replacement firmware is free. So even if the idea doesn't appeal to you now, it remains an option if you should buy a new "N-band" device and find you're still having connectivity problems in the bonus room.
