Excellent input. Sorry for taking so long to get back here. These eighty odd hour work weeks are pretty rough.

Anyways, let me clarify on what I want it for. I'm looking for a platform for a semi long range gun. If its not sub 1moa out of the box thats fine as long as it is fairly accurate. Preferably a 20" bbl or so also. Im not exactly looking to build 1k yard shooter but something i can make good long shots with. AR style platforms are sort of my thing since im used to them and they are very versatile. But I do like the feel of the M1A also. I've heard a lot of good things about the FNAR but I'm not too fond of the way the look. I would love a Mk17 also but are very pricey new. If i could find one used I'd probably go that route. So far I'm hearing a lot of great things abut the DPMS so i am going to look into that one. Thanks for the input guys!

Oh and shooting mountain lions out of a helicopter > shooting hogs out of a plane :D

Not going to comment about shooting hogs from an airplane....

As far as .308 semi autos go, I have a socom 16 and FNAR.

The socom is a lot of fun and looks great in a GI issue wood stock. Optics are quite tough. I tried a Scout scope from my Ruger GSR, but It didn't feel correct.

The FNAR is ugly, but so accurate and smooth. Mags are expensive and can be difficult to locate.

Since you like the AR platform DPMS has 16-18 inch models and 20-24. The H&K417 is also excellent, I've used the recce several times.
