Fly Fishing: My new love

Used to all the time. Too gimped to do much anymore. When ya start fly fishing; it makes all the other types of fishin look pretty lame. When ya get real stirred up and aint around the trout streams; try fishin for bluegill with top water flies on a light rod. There aint anything greater; and ya can do it without takin a trip to the mountains.

Enjoy!!!

I love it also...Trout, Bass and Bream! I'm going to give striper a try this year too! I even got into tying my own flies, and absolutely enjoy the relaxation that brings!

I'm really intrigued of late by the tiny 3 weight rods. They look like a ton of fun for finessing some little fish out of little streams.

been doing it all my life not any good but like to catch big carp with tiny flys

I've heard of people fly fishing for carp. Sounds like a good fight...may have to give it a try!

Still trying to master fly casting though.

I have done the carp fishing with a fly rod, used a popper and man what a fight!

Used to run limb and trot line, my job was to catch bait, did it on the fly rod, great fun,

but life happens, married, kids and now no time. I know, take the time.

I picked up a really nice 3wt Lefty Kreh setup late last year. Honestly, since I stared fishing it I don't think I've touched my 5wt more than once or twice.

I'll tell you, a nice sized Bluegill on a through-action rod, ultralight furled leader & 7X tippet is about as much fun as you can have! It turns a 2 minute tussle into a 5 minute deathmatch! I've never been happier catching little 8-10" Brookies & Brownies than I am on this setup.

The Elk near me doesn't seem to hold many bigger fish, so I figured I may as well get the maximum amount of grins from catching the tiddlers (Although I seem to remembering be able to thread a size 22 hook a lot easier 20 years ago!)

That whole post makes me smile!

Sounds fun.

Yes, i fly fish for carp and cat fish very challenging 20 mins fights are the norm.

Ive use bead head stick bugs and wolly buggers with sucess. And most important bring your NET, ive lost a 10 lb cat coz i yanked the leader and snap!

Ya'll got me to thinking...

I love tying Wooley Buggers and I know places where I can catch some nice white bass. I think I'm going to try my hand fly fishing for them!

I can't hardly find any info on this. Any links? All I'm finding is rods for sale...not really no info on 3wt fishing.

I bought a 5wt a couple of months ago to start trout and bream fishing. Little Red River fishing. Nice change from spinning rod. a9usumaz.jpg

It's exactly like 5wt fishing, only smaller! Same flies, same techniques, just smaller, lighter gear.

I generally fish a 5X or smaller tippet & flies from size 16s down to 24s. You'll fish a much shorter cast too, most of my fishing is done at 20' or less. I also found that a furled thread leader, rather than a mono taper makes presentation a lot more precise & aids in casting.

The biggest thing I've landed on my 3wt so far is a 6lb bass. 6X tippet & IIRC a size 16 Royal Wulff. I remember it being the fight of my life!

behind my house in the spring its great

also river herring or skipjack on a flyrod is nice

When I can find places to fish for "skips" I love using ultra light spinning gear. I'm going to start doing more fly fishing this year.

Thanks for the info Rob. I thought it was something tricky. So am I to understand that 3wt fly fishing is the "ultra light" side of fly fishing?

Sounds like a "Grin"!

Middle-light end of the lightweight scale. 1wt is really ultralight & then you move onto Tenkara for a while until the lure of ever decreasing fish sizes grabs you & you take up Tanago fishing, where a size 24 hook would be considered huge & line weight is measured in ounces or even grams!
