painting a polymer stock

Has anyone done this?

I picked up a very inexpensive plinking rifle. It has an ugly black polymer stock. Has anyone painted these things? Will Krylon or something similar work on it?

I do not want to duracoat. That would cost about as much as the rifle did.

I am not worried about the metal hardware, just the plastic rifle stock.

I have had luck with the spray vinyl dye that is used for car interiors. Bought it at Walmart. Auto stores have a wider selection. I used the light tan.

Won't be a problem Mike, just know you won't ever get it off once done as it will bond with the polymer. Use thin coats and allow them to dry well before applying more so you don't cause runs that could "melt" small areas and cause texturing issues that would be very visible.

I know with the dye it bonds very well. Take it slow. I have used spray paint. They

make it for plastic. I have had mixed results depending on the plastic.

I am going to look for the dye and compare it to some spray paint made for polymer.

My wife painted some deck chairs that were plastic and the paint did not last very well. Of course those chairs baked in the sun and soaked in rain too. And the stock of this rifle is different than the chairs were.

I am optimistic paint will work. I am guessing a clear coat when I am done might be of help too.

That dye will probably work well.I would go to an auto body supplier like KeyStone. They would have the best selection in colors, and also all the prep supplies available like oil remover, and clear, etc.

If I'm remembering right its only about 7 or 8 bucks a can

All our scouts sprayed their m4s with krylon. It held up alright in the desert.
