Remington 40Xb

Is a Remington 40XB worth the extra $$$. Does anyone have any experience shooting one? I will be using this for target shooting , not hunting. What kind of groups are possible. This is a 308 repeater that I have a chance to buy that is like new in the box made in 1966.

I don’t know, but at two to three times the cost I would have to see it out shoot a 700 VLS in .308.

IMO, the Remington 40X rifles, especially the older ones are worth the extra money. These rifles, based on my experience, are or were built in the Remington Custom Shop. The actions are/were blue printed and trued with the bolts hand lapped to insure very smooth operationa and incredible tolerances. The Remington barrels for these rifles were specially selected for straightness and I believe the bores were also had lapped for smoothness.

All of the 40X, XC or other models that I have seen shot by various shooters, shot very, very well either out of the box or after years of use. They are prized among high power competition collectors rifles as well.

With the right hand loads, it will easily out shoot any current, production Remington Varmint rifle.

What kind of money are we talking about here? You can get a Remington 700 5R for a little under $1000. I've heard some pretty awesome things about them, I just think the stocks are ugly.

Yeah.. but the Rem 5R is not for XTC .. I am going to presume that this fellow is wanting it for both XTC work and long range..

You could expect to pay between 1500 and 2000 for a match built 40X.

I do have a r5 and it does shoot very well. The 40 x is a little under 1000 , I do not know round count and am taking the word of the seller as to condition. I do have a 3 day No shoot inspection/ Approval period. It comes with the original box and Unertl blocks. When and if i get it i'll post pictures.
