I didn't think this was legal. I just received a gunbroker.com purchase from a guy in Indiana and it came in a flat rate box with no markings.

Yep, loaded cartridges, powder, or primers not allowed through USPS, but of course folks get away with what they get away with.

I wonder if that also applies to FFL holders?

I know they can ship firearms yet the rest of us can't, maybe it is the same in this case.

Never found any exceptions in USPS regs regarding explosives, like there are for firearms, so I don't think so.

Not sure what you mean by this. Anyone can send a firearm through USPS. The typical rules of you must ship to an FFL is true for out of state, but anyone can ship a firearm. I may have misunderstood what you meant.

Handguns must go UPS or FedEx, but regular long guns can go USPS.

I think the op's orginal question was about the legality of shipping ammo by USPS, and I don't think that's allowed. But I've been wrong before.

8.6 Hazardous Materials

Harmful matter also includes regulated hazardous materials as defined in 10.0 that are likely to harm USPS employees or to destroy, deface, or otherwise damage mail or postal equipment. This includes materials such as caustic poisons (acids and alkalies), oxidizers, or highly flammable liquids, gases, or solids; or materials that are likely, under conditions incident to transportation, to cause fires through friction, absorption of moisture, or spontaneous chemical changes or from retained heat from manufacturing or processing, including explosives or containers previously used for shipping high explosives with a liquid ingredient (such as dynamite), ammunition, fireworks, radioactive materials, matches, or articles emitting obnoxious odors.

Such an informative and authoritative comment is always welcome. ;)

Seriously, if you'd simply read thread, especially link to the horse's mouth above in #4, you wouldn't have to wonder anymore.

"341.21 Nonmailable Explosives

Small Arms Ammunition. Ammunition is classified as a Division 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, or 1.4 explosive, depending on the degree of hazard. Ammunition that is regulated as a Class 1 explosive and designed to be fired from a pistol, revolver, rifle, or shotgun, as well as associated primers and blank cartridges (including those designed for tools) and propellant powder for use in any firearm, is prohibited from mailing."

THanks guys. Everything I found on USPS ridiculously arcane website said ammunition was prohibited, but I thought I was missing something (like a 20 round maximum or something).
