Unsecured weapon, 3 year old child dies as a result

This should serve as a reminder to secure weapons when not being carried. I don't have small children, but hope to someday. Hopefully I can head the lessons learned here. Guns can be readily available for emergency reasons, but still inaccessible to 3yo's

Now as far as the indictment, I'm not sure that's necessary, especially for the three women, who may or may not have known about the gun.

I am sure they will shift the blame to who's gun it was and saying that person should have made sure it was secure. By charging them all, they are probably trying to force a plea deal.

The event already convicted the trooper. Now the justice system is going to make a circus out of an event

that just needs to go away. He and his family will live with this for the rest of their lives, regardless of whether

it's behind bars or not.

No, they won’t convict them all; I doubt anyone will go to trial. The DA obviously wants to send a message.

We have discussed here many times being able to keep a firearm accessible if needed, but out of the hands of children. It’s a tough task, but one the law holds firearm owners accountable for.

This Trooper and his family I’m sure are devastated. Only prayers can help them now.

Horrible story.. I have a 3 year old daughter, which is why I always make sure my guns are locked up not just put away. Prayers to the family.

It's a law here in Florida that guns must be "secured" if kids are in the house. My brother has to keep his only gun(Norinco 12ga) secured with trigger lock. I've told him I highly doubt he's going to have time to get that lock off if he needs it. I hope I'm wrong.

I have a 19 month old, and I have already started talking to him about gun safety. I also keep all of my firearms locked up. Every firearm I own, with the exception of my primary home defense pistol, is locked in a gun safe. My HD pistol is locked in a small gun safe in my nightstand drawer. There is simply no excuse for this sort of tragedy, and a cop should know better.

Not really. Open Carry is illegal unless fishing or camping. No guns allowed signs do not have the weight of law here. Nothing else that I can think of at the moment.

Pretty much but not quite.

From what I remember it is a crime if a minor gains access to your firearm and uses it in a crime.

All gun purchases include a lock on the pretense that you will use it to secure your gun from unauthorized access but it's not a law that you have to use it. In my case my whole apartment was one big old no kids zone, absolutely no reason whatsoever that any child should be in there at all. Having said that I was comfortable leaving any one of my guns loaded and easily available. Usually on my night stand.

Also, kind of liked the lock with purchase. For a buck you got some nice usable padlocks.
