Pipe Smokers

Does anyone here smoke a pipe?

I have just decided that I want to puff a pipe. I enjoy a cigar every once in a while, and I love the smell of a pipe. My Uncle use to smoke one when I was a yougin, and I liked the smell then also.

I have no knowledge of what to do or how to do it. I went to a tobacco shop yesterday (that now has been sold to foriegners) and started asking questions. I told him that I wanted to start smoking a pipe, so what do I need. I went inexpensive, so I could see if it was something I wanted to continue with, plus he didn't speak great english so he wasn't a big help.

I bought a cheap pipe, a pack of cleaners, a pack of filters, a pack of "Smoker's Pride Cherry Pipe Tobacco" and an adjustable angle torch lighter, went home and tried it out. The taste and smell is not what I remember.

What is a good pipe tobacco that is very aromatic?

I enjoy one every so often...

Start with A good corn cob pipe, and dedicate one to the type of tobacco you'll be smoking (aromatics vs. virginias vs. orientals, etc.)

Light with a pipe lighter or with matches (after the sulfur tip has burned off).

'Sip' the pipe, don't draw hard like a cig or cigar.

Pipe smoking tends to be more cerebral and reflective than other forms of tobacco use. So, be patient with it

Back in the days, I used Borkums Riff Bourbon Blend. If you can find a "good" tobacco shop, they will probably have loose pipe tobacco in jars, of differing flavors and smells. Pick out one that you like or try to blend a couple of types/flavors. My shop had an apple coarse cut (flakes) that I would blend with a small amount of vanilla riff cut (thread-like shreds). You also have to "break in" the pipe. It doesn't start smoking and tasting good until you have about an 1/8 inch coating of carbon in the bowl. If you can find that good shop, I'm sure they can fill you in on all the little tricks that make smoking a pipe a pleasure.

Looking for good tobacco? Review this website:

Frog Morton On The Town is a nice starter baccy... As is the Virginia Butternut Burley from pipesandcigars.com

These are the best bang for the buck pipes while you are learning. They smoke cool, and if you mess them up, they are only a few bucks to replace. Also, you can have a different pipe for each type of tobacco, so the flavors don't mix.

Once you know whether or not pipe smoking is for you or not, THEN you go out and buy the nice briars.

Damn, you folks are making me want to go out and get a cigar.

I smoked a pipe for a while when I was quitting cigarettes many eons ago. My father was always a pipe smoker. But there is something about a pipe in the mouth of a younger person that makes them look dorky.

Thanks for all the replies.

I think I will swing by the store you mentioned Clownsdd.

Dang Mars, I can't help that I have older tastes. LOL I would not smoke it out in public just for that reason. It will just be an after dinner thing at home, or while I am at the lodge.

I was going to mention that shop as well, it is directly across the street from the Half Shell Resturant. There is one in midtown across or almost across from Danvers. I have only heard things about the one on Mendenhall and went in the one in midtown, he was a bank customer when I was at the bank. I don't smoke them so I am of no more help.;)

Yeah, pipes and fedora's are the 2 things I look forward to being able to get away with in public as I get old like Mars. I agree a young guy just can't pull those 2 off.

I went to tobacco corner on my way home tonight, and Ken took great care of me. He sold me a great Briar wood pipe, some nice tobacco, and even showed me how to pack the bowl and light it properly.

Very good customer service. I recommend it to anyone.

That's a good idea. Just hide when you smoke it. :tough:

If you find you enjoy pipe smoking then you may want to invest in a nice Meerschaum Pipe. This is the kind of pipe I smoke. Unlike a briar or other type of pipe you will only get the flavor of the tobacco it will impart no flavor to the smoke like wood will as the stone will not burn. And becasue it does not burn in you can smoke different blends in the same pipe without getting a odd mixture of flavors. Meerschaum will make a nice cool dry smoke that I like.

My brother does the pipe smoking thing, though not so much these days... I'm still a cigar guy, though I may pick up the pipe thing down the road some time. Maybe, as has been mentioned here, when I'm older and can pull it off better.

Speaking of cigars, it's Saturday night, and that means it's time to retire to the deck with a Partagas Black Label.
