Yea it was wicked. That's what I understand anyway.

Well, nobody died, so it wasn't all that, battle wise. But quite significant episode regarding corruption vs free elections and all. Local kingpins certainly got their comeuppance, but none of them even served any time.

In my youth in Athens, was around a couple of guys who were involved, but no contacts for ya, sorry, don't even remember their names. Only the dirty pictures on the walls at the parts shop where they hung out. :)

This is cool stuff, I never new about this event. I love learning about historical events, especially when they happened so close to home.

My dad was there but he has passed on now. He told me alittle about it. The Cantrell's and Kennedy's were affluent people in the county, with the Cantrell's being from Etowah and the Kennedy's being from Athens. Back in those days the county deputy's got paid by fines from the arrestees. There was even a gun fight in Etowah between a county deputy and a Etowah city policeman. Over the county deputy wanting a prisoner that Etowah had arrested. I can't remember which one it was, I think it was the city policeman. Bleed to death in the street. There are two local historians that should be able to help you.

Sheriff Joe Guy - Sherrif of McMinn County 423-745-5622 {sherrif's office}

Durant Tullock - Director of Etowah Chamber of Commerce 423-263-2228 {office}

Hope this is helpful to you
