Tip question?

Recommended Posts

Okay, so we have a new buffet in town, not bad food, but not the world's best either. Anyway, the question is do you leave a tip? It is the type where a waitress seats you and gets your drink, but then there are floaters that are in the dining area and they take away the plates and get refills, and such. Now I think you should leave a tip, but just curious as to who actually gets the tip. Is it a big pool that they all split at the end of the shift, or what? Or are tips not required?

I think you still need to tip. All the workers probably split the tips evenly from a big pool at the end of the night. As to how much to tip. I let that be decided by the service I received.

At starbucks you tip it goes in a big jar & they split it. There you could have 4 people wait on you. It is probably the same.

All servers are going to be taxed on their tips based on 8% of their gross sales. You should always tip at least that. If you get poor service, discuss the issue with the manager.

It depends on the place. Most ethnic restaurants are more likely a tip share as those are generally closer knit groups of employees and tend to all be close friends or family.

The standard tip for a buffet is 10%.

My general rule for tips is if your job involves refilling my drink, you get tipped, if not, you don't. Following that rule, a waiter/waitress at a buffet gets tipped. People at Starbucks don't.

I guess it depends on their base pay really. Servers in sit down restraunts get paid 2.13 per hour, so they rely on tips very heavily. I'm not sure if servers at buffet style restraunts get paid w/ the same rate or not.

Okay, kinda what I thought. Our bill was $16 ish and I left 2 bucks, and only had 1 refill. So I guess that was acceptable.

I usually leave a 5 just so Im not pulling out the tip calculator regardless of the amount on the bill, but what I have always wondered is are we suppose to tip Sonic girls?Yeah they bring out the food but thats it.

As far as bad service goes I will still leave a tip of small change like a dime or a quarter.Just enough to let them know I didnt forget to tip and that there service sucked.

For me, it depends on how good they look in their little black shorts !

You know, I never did until I met my wife, who worked at Sonic in high school, and was informed that you do. And my sister in law is a manager at Sonic and they still get tips. Pretty damn good ones too. My wife used to clear $100 bucks on a Saturday in the summer. She would work 2 nights and a weekend day and get $200 in tips and another 100 on her check.

She also informed me that they deserve it just as much as any other waitress, and you know I think she might have a point. How many other waitresses bring your food in rain, snow, below freezing temps, 100+ degree heat, which by the way is amplified by the asphalt and the heat from the engines of all the cars that they are waiting on. So if nothing else, just round up your order and let them keep the change( if it is $5.20 just give them $6, I mean really what good is that $.80, but if they wait on 100 people and all give $.80 that's $80 in tips.)

I agree. I should explain that I usually tip 20-30% but rarely do I ever leave less than 10%, even if the service was bad. If I ever leave like .50 to make a point about the bad service I do let the manager know.

Its kinda funny I became a much better tipper after I worked delivering pizza where you rely on tips to make decent money.

I tip Buffet servers usually $1-2 per person.

I tip SOnic Girls. I generally round up, but if it's not much i'll through in an extra dollar. IF they are on ROLLER SKATES I tip an extra dollar on top of that.

Why don't you ask? I doubt they will bite.

I always tip if any service is involved. I got tires last Friday after I got my truck back I asked to see the mechanic who serviced my truck. I threw him a fiver.

High school kid at the grocer takes my bags to the car he gets a buck or two.

Buffet server gets 15%, regular sitdown waitress or waiter who does a kick ass job gets 20%-25%. Crappy service and you get what you deserve.

Hot bartenders who keep my beer cold and or glass full get tipped very well when I leave.

Yes, tip the sonic girl.

Yes, tip at the buffet.

Yes, tip the haircut lady.

Pretty much anywhere you receive a service like that you need to tip. Always 15-20%. Don't forget the valet or the guy who carries your luggage at the airport or hotel to your room.

Just to add about the Sonic thing. I used to be a manager there a LONG time ago, my wife at the time worked there and my daughter did last year.

Sometimes I tip, most of the time I don't. Well...now I use my card so cash changing hand anyway.

Yes the "carhops" bring out your food in all kinds of weather, but they are being paid just as much as the cooks, fountain and other inside. Ever worked a hot grill in July with the ventilation fans broke? Many nights the carhops made more than I did between regular pay and tips. But I admit my daughter did right well with tips and I was glad. If they split the tips between the cooks, fountains and carhops I'd be more apt to give a little...but that just me.

IMHO, yes, you should leave a tip. Maybe not the 20% or so you'd leave at Chili's, O'Charley's, ect, but a few bucks would be nice.

Now, Subway and Starbucks, I just don't get that. As if a $6 cup of coffee or $8 sandwich isn;t bad enough. I never understood their tip jars.

+1 13 or 14 years ago I slaved in that hot grease pit for $4.75 an hour and many nights heard the car hops complain about only making 80-90 dollars in tips on top of their $4.75. To this day it drives me nuts to see people tip the car hops. More than once I have walked in and tipped the cooks there and thanked them for my food being hot and correct. (two things the girl in the tight shorts had nothing to do with) I could go on but i'll get off the box.

Having worked in restaurants for many years as a cook and kitchen manager there was nothing I hated worse hearing at the bar afterwards was how this server walked with $80 to $100 on a Friday or Saturday night. They came in at 6 and left at 10:30. I came in at noon and left at 1 and made the same amount only I won't see mine until next payday.

T.I.P.S.

To Insure Prompt Service. IF you do a good job you will be tipped very well. My glass should never be empty and my food should be hot when you bring it to me. If you don't do well you will get tipped 10%. Sorry, don't like it? Go work in the kitchen and see how you like it.

Strippers make great tips. Give me a boob shot when you bring me my food & ill throw a xtra 10 on top of what you already got coming. If I get horrible horrible service depending where im at I may leave you a quarter with a booger on it unless I dine & dash.

I have a friend that puts a stack of quarters $10.00 worth on the table. Tells the waitress that is her tip. If his glass gets empty, or if he has any problem he takes a quarter away, at the end of dinner she gets what is left????????????????????????
