The Ten Commandments Of Owning A Pet

September 14, 2012 | No Comments » | Topics: Animals, Life

1. My life is likely to last ten to fifteen years. Any separation from you will be painful for me. Remember that before you acquire me.

2. Give me time to understand what you want from me.

3. Place your trust in me. Remember that before you acquire me.

4. Don’t be angry with me for long and don’t lock me up as punishment. You have your work, your friends, and your entertainment. I only have you.

5. Talk to me sometimes. Even if I don’t understand your words, I understand your voice when it is speaking to me. Be aware that however you treat me, I will never forget.

6. Remember before you hit me that I have teeth that can easily crush the bones in your hand, but I choose not to bite you.

7. Before you scold me for being uncooperative, obstinate, or lazy, ask yourself if something might be bothering me. Perhaps I don’t understand what you ask of me or perhaps I am not feeling well, not getting the right food, been out in the sun too long, or my heart is getting old and weak.

8. Take care of me when I get old, you too will grow old.

9. Go with me on difficult journeys. Never say " I can’t bear to watch," or "let it happen in my absence." Everything is easier if you are there.

10. Remember, no matter what, that I love you. Unconditionally.

Thank you for posting this. I'd seen it a wile ago and lost it. It's great knowledge to have about our companions.

I've said this before, but I feel it's worth saying again. The love of our pets/companions is the second closest thing to God's love for us on this earth.

Very very true words right there. I admit to having arguments with my dumb cat, but he starts them. :D

I'm alone at home a lot since my son spends half his time with his mother. During those times the cat is my only pal. He's alright...for a cat. At 18lb he's more like a small brown bear lumbering around the house.

I'm a dog person, but living in a high traffic area and not having a fence makes dog ownership impractical since I refuse to tie one up outside for any length of time.

Pets are companions like no other.

We had a boxer growing up. I buried him on my 16th b/day. I still hurt and I'm 35 now.

Honestly, I hate dogs. They get ahold of you. You have no choice but to love them. They love you, don't gripe or complain. They don't mind if you gain a little weight. They don't mind if you fart. They don't mind if no one else in this godforsaken world loves you or not. They love you and with the exception of Jesus Christ, there's not another organism to ever exist on this planet that understand unconditional love anymore than they do. They give you years of faithful service and companionship......then they leave you.

Biggest religious argument I ever had with my family was over the dog. I grew up in a strict religious household and their contention was that animals didn't go to heaven because they had no soul. If my dog isn't there, I don't wanna go either. It wouldn't be heaven if he wasn't there. I miss the old butt licker. I think he might have been a marine in a past life. He sure lived and died by the creed Semper Fidelis.

Touching....I have lost a few too. Some were "lap" dogs, some just took up space on the floor, yet others suffered through cold, rain, snow, heat and every thing you could throw at them while rabbit hunting. And at the end of the day, although tired, beat and bloody, their love and dedication to you is second to none! Lossing a blessed and loving pet is one thing, but when that pet was your hunting partner for 15 years....it's devastating!!!

My best friend is in congestive heart failure for over a year. The Vet said big dogs go quickly, but he still keeps going. He doesn’t know he’s sick. My wife use to let him out to greet me when I came home, but we had to stop that because he gets so excited. I take the best care of him that I can for all the great years he has given me. This is very hard.
