What if this guy had his HCP also and was, let's say, a little strange. When he noticed you with your hand on your gun he felt threatened and drew his weapon. Could have been a really bad scene. Another thing you have to be prepared for if that is possible.

Then acting a little bit more strange in the wrong place at the wrong time would have resulted in him losing his life. I didn't do anything but get my self ready and into a position to defend myself. If he would have started acting in another way, then i would have drew my gun, but he didn't, so the situation was dissolved. Don't think I am running around being a "mall ninja". That was the first and only encounter I have ever had, that I put myself in that high of an alert mode.

I think the guy was planning on stealing or at least breaking into my truck, and when he saw me he thought "here is a white boy I can jack", and I think my actions prevented that. I didn't have to yell at him, or scream vulgar things, but I know what I did ended what ever plans he had.

We can run through "what ifs" all day, and believe me I have, and at the end of the day, it all worked out, and nobody was hurt. If I had it to do over again and knowing now what I know, the only thing I might would have done different, is stay on the passenger side of the truck, drew my gun and kept in 'low ready" out of site, and asked him to move away. Then walked around the truck bed instead of around the front of thetruck, because I really let the guy get to close to me. If he had a knife he could stabbed me in the gut, before I could have drawn my gun, that is how close I let him get. I dodn't think I will make that mistake again.

What I learned

1. Never let the "BG" get that close

2. Never, ever, ever, ever, leave my gun behind.

Distance is your friend in a gun fight.

First rule of a gunfight: bring a gun.

Sounds like you did fine. That sure sounded like a bad situation about to happen to me.

I think your actions were appropriate. Other than leaving it in the car!!! I know you admit to that. It is obvious that they were up to no good. What if he had a HCP, doesn't matter, he was acting weird, parked and standing at your truck in an otherwise empty parking lot. You don't have to wait until your are victimized before protecting yourself.

Nothing to do with the topic, but what does that "." mean?

I posted something that happened to me and I felt it was a little goofy for this post is all, I removed it myself, wouldn't let me delete my post...lol

someone back near the beginning of this thread posted something about if one is not sure they can pull the trigger then maybe they ought to not carry the gun. I'd go back and quote from the post but I am too tired.

Anyway I do not know if I could shoot or not. But I do know that if I do not have the gun I have limited my choices on how I can respond.

Really? But what if I'm quicker 'n' you?

Then I guess, like a cheap hooker, I'm gonna get screwed!

Seriously though, that is a valid point. I had a conversation with a gentleman last night at work about how he was planning to carry his gun. He wanted to carry it in a shoulder rig under a polo shirt. As politely as I could I said "Sir, if you ever need to draw it in under 4 seconds, you'll be dead." It's the age old argument of how deep is to deep? If you can't get to it when you need it, it's like not having it.

I have found an article that expresses my thoughts written by Louis Awerbuck. He states we need skill, cunning and the powers of observatino. The skill part is pratice the observation part is obvious if you don't see it or know it how do you defend it.

the cunning part is the part that I question.

He comments that Westerners least utilize Cunning(trechery) (ruthlessness) he comments that americans tend to fight fair. We do not tend to tear the eyes out of a would be rapist, Ie We play fair and the bad guys dont', This puts us at a disadvantage.

A lot of people with a heavily religious background, are at the other end of that scale, many would lose their life rather than take one.

People get selective about which verse in the Bible they quote. There are probably as many verses telling you to arm yourself as there are telling you to disarm and let other folks have their way with you.

Either way would be learned behavior.

"Quicker 'n' you" was a reference to someone's screen name on here.

As far as cover goes, the rule is the deeper the cover the harder to bring into action.

I don't know the answer to that one. Everyone has to evaluate his own circumstances and make the decision.

I have thought about the topic of this thread a lot since becoming a gun owner. I generally try to avoid any kind of confrontation, so I think if I had a run in with a bad guy, I'd probably be pretty shook up. Pulling the trigger and actually taking the life of another human would be the last thing I would want to do. Although if it's me or them, it's gonna be them.

Now I think that if my wife, kids, grandkids were being threatened, something inside me would snap and I would go into protector mode. At least I hope I would. If I get attacked, that's one thing, them it's another.

But what really keeps me up at night is the thought of actually doing the deed of pulling the trigger, missing my target and hitting an innocent person. Above all else, this is what would prevent me from shooting.

You know, I was at work when I responded to that and now that I sit here at home half-drunk I got it. There's a lesson in here somewhere lol.

Jest aside, yea I think ole "quick" has given us a good amount of funnies for quite awhile...
