If I were going to carry the way you describe I'd carry a 3" barrel Ruger SP101 like the one I already own. You can get them new now with a 4.2" barrel, which may be of interest to you as well.

I was originally going to say the SP101 like quite a few other folks but since you seem to want the longer barrel I'd go with the GP100 SS. You can get either the 3" or 4.2" barrel. My dad has the 4.2" and it's a hoss for sure. The bonus is the extra round over the SP101.

My suggestion would be a stainless Ruger Security,Service or Speed Six.Those guns were built to last and you can find them cheaper than a new or used S&W.

Out of the Rugers I do like these best, I carried a Ruger Police Service Six for several years and it was a really good shooter, I'd still rather carry a S&W 19/66 but the Ruger Police/Security/Speed series were/are really good sidearm choices.

I'm all about owning and shooting S&W K frame magnums, fixed or adjustable sight models 2.5" to 6", so long as they're made prior to 1980.
