We just got back in from a weekend down in Texas, unfortunately we didn't have time to check out the Alamo but we were able to check out the USS Lexington on the gulf and then around the state capitol buildings and the Texas tower. WIll post pics later of the boat, that thing was amazing, it took us half a day just to walk around to the parts that were open to the public.. Wife doesn't even like military history but about 30 minutes in I was chasing her down for the rest of the day.

Also learned some cool stuff about Austin, that city is designed to be the capitol of a nation just like D.C. is. Their senators are part-time and only get $7k/year, every meeting/session they hold is public and the coolest thing was hearing the guy describe the battle of San Jacinto. I guess the Texans attacked the Mexican army and either killed or captured about 2000 soldiers there in approximately 18 minutes. Texans only suffered around 40 casualties total.

Anyways, pretty cool stuff, if any of you all make it down to the gulf, the aircraft carrier is definitely something to see. Oh and you may be angry too when you are sitting between multiple large refineries and the cheapest gas around is still $3.75

I grew up in Pensacola and the Lexington was stationed there most of my childhood. I loved going out to NAS Pensacola to see it. I hated when they decommissioned her and moved her to TX. I am glad to hear that it is in good shape and that people are still enjoying it.

In really good shape, they had a lot of the areas sectioned off with cleaning crews while we were there and they're in the process of doing a full plane restoration on a new jet on the main floor.

Our scout troop spent two nights on the Yorktown back in 2003. Had a ball getting there and back and our stay on the ship was incredible.

The SS Hunley is also worth seeing.

How could I forget the Hunley? Very cool indeed.
